25 of Italy's 27 largest cities will be under red alert on Monday 3 August, up from 19 on Saturday and 23 on Sunday. Messina and Reggio Calabria stay on yellow, level 1 pre-alert.
Perceived temperatures are forecast to reach 39°C in Naples, 38°C in Florence and Palermo, and 37°C in Rome.
The health ministry warns the emergency heatwave poses risks to healthy and active people, not only vulnerable groups.
Spain has seen 221,446 hectares burn in 2026, about 132 per cent above the 20-year average and roughly six times the area lost by the same point in 2025; burnt area in Portugal is also above normal.
The heatwave follows earlier extreme heat in Western Europe; central Europe could see up to 41°C in the coming days.
