PEC Zwolle defeats Heerenveen 2-0 with second-half goals by Viergever and Kostons
Nick Viergever and Koen Kostons scored after the break to give PEC Zwolle a 2-0 away win against sc Heerenveen, earning the club their first league points of the season.
First-half pressure from Heerenveen
The Eredivisie match in Friesland began with sustained attacking pressure from the home side, coached by Robin Veldman. Seeking an early breakthrough, Heerenveen registered four attempts on goal inside the opening six minutes, though none hit the target. The closest chance arrived around the twenty-minute mark when striker Dylan Vente, formerly of PEC Zwolle, struck the crossbar from a direct free kick. PEC Zwolle goalkeeper Jasper Schendelaar kept the score level with a series of saves, stopping multiple close-range efforts from Maxence Rivera as well as another shot from Vente. PEC Zwolle threatened rarely before the interval, with an attempt by Dylan Mbayo blocked and a header from Koen Kostons lacking sufficient power. Shortly before the break, Heerenveen captain Ryan Thomas received a yellow card for simulation inside the penalty area, and Jacob Trenskow fired into the side netting.
Second-half turnaround and record goal
PEC Zwolle entered the match without points following consecutive defeats against Ajax and at FC Twente. Manager Henry van der Vegt retained the exact starting lineup from the previous fixture, and his side transformed their performance directly after the restart. Winger Dylan Mbayo broke open the defense on the right wing, beating his direct marker and crossing low to Nick Viergever, who tapped in his first goal for the club to make it 0-1. At 37 years of age, the experienced defender became the second-oldest goalscorer for PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie, behind only Rinus Israël. PEC Zwolle maintained their attacking momentum, and around the hour mark, Mbayo drove inside from the wing once more to deliver the ball to Koen Kostons, who bundled past two defenders and drove a hard finish into the net for a 0-2 lead.

Substitutions and late chances
Trailing by two goals, Robin Veldman responded with a triple substitution, withdrawing Oliver Braude, Maxence Rivera, and Dirk Proper in favor of Nikolai Petrov, Lanroy Machine, and Levi Smans. The appearance was the first for Smans since sustaining a cruciate ligament knee injury against FC Volendam early in the previous season. Smans immediately created space outside the box and sent an effort whistling just wide of Schendelaar's goal. Heerenveen struggled to mount a sustained late offensive, while Lanroy Machine lost control of the ball after a miscue by defender Simon Graves, allowing Schendelaar to collect easily. Instead, PEC Zwolle repeatedly threatened on the counterattack as Heerenveen goalkeeper Bernt Klaverboer stopped attempts from substitutes Gabriël Reiziger, Thijs Oosting, and Ibrahim Cissoko. Viergever had another goal disallowed due to an offside position, and substitute Ody Velanas tested Klaverboer in the final minute.
Standings impact and season milestones
The 2-0 result secured PEC Zwolle's first three points of the Eredivisie campaign in round three. The victory ended a long traveling drought for the club, representing their first away win in the league since 15 August of the prior year. For Heerenveen, the defeat was their first of the league season and left the team on four points. A win at home would have lifted Veldman's side into second place in the table, moving them past regional rivals FC Groningen and closing the gap to league leaders AZ to two points. Instead, the Friesland club remained on four points after three rounds.
