A new analysis of NHS data stretching from 2011 to 2024 has uncovered a marked rise in early-onset type 2 diabetes across England, and young obese women are at the centre of the trend. Researchers at Imperial College London described the pattern as a "worrying increase" after scrutinising millions of primary-care records. The study found that the number of young adults developing the condition has climbed in recent years, and those affected tend to carry substantially more excess weight at the point of diagnosis than older individuals with the disease.

A post-pandemic acceleration
The rise has largely occurred since the Covid pandemic. While the NHS data set predates the pandemic by nearly a decade, the steepest increases in early-onset cases coincide with the post-2020 period. The researchers link the acceleration directly to climbing obesity prevalence in younger age groups, a connection that has sharpened since public-health disruptions and lifestyle changes during lockdown years. Women in their 20s appear particularly vulnerable, although the underlying reasons for the sex disparity are still being investigated.

Type 2 diabetes is serious at any age, but when it develops in a person’s 20s or 30s it tends to be more aggressive. Diabetes UK, which was not directly involved in the research, warns that early-onset disease cuts lives short and raises the risk of devastating complications such as heart attacks and strokes. The charity stressed that the condition is largely preventable through weight management and lifestyle changes, but that reversing the current trend will require sustained public-health effort.

Because the study draws on routine NHS records rather than a dedicated cohort, the researchers were able to capture a near-complete picture of diagnosed diabetes in England. That granularity makes the obesity link hard to dispute: at every age band, higher body-mass index correlates with earlier onset, but the association is starkest among women under 30. The findings will likely intensify pressure on policymakers to expand preventive programmes aimed at young adults, including tighter regulation of junk-food marketing and improved access to weight-management services on the NHS.
