
Three fans die from suffocation in crowd crush during Mexico City World Cup celebrations after Ecuador win
Three people died of asphyxiation when over a million fans filled Mexico City streets following the national team's first knockout-stage World Cup win in 40 years.
What happened
Thousands of jubilant fans poured onto the streets of Mexico City after Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the World Cup round of 32 on Tuesday night. The celebrations centred on the Angel of Independence monument and the Paseo de la Reforma, where emergency services later found unconscious individuals in the crush.
The victims
A 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were found at the intersection of Hamburgo and Lancaster Streets, and a 48-year-old woman was found on Berna Street in Colonia Juárez. All three died from asphyxiation, the capital's health secretariat confirmed. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
After receiving advanced resuscitation efforts, the deaths of a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman from suffocation have been confirmed.
Response
Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences and called for responsible celebration. President Claudia Sheinbaum also offered sympathies at a press conference.

A historic night turns tragic
Mexico's win was the team's first in a World Cup knockout match since 1986, ending a 40-year drought. The host nation's success drew enormous crowds, with the city government estimating more than a million people in public viewing areas. Earlier in the tournament, a driver ploughed into celebrating fans in Cabo San Lucas, injuring at least 17.
