Response

Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences and called for responsible celebration. President Claudia Sheinbaum also offered sympathies at a press conference.

With my heart in my hand, I send a hug and my most sincere condolences to their loved ones. We reiterate the call to always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy.

A historic night turns tragic

Mexico's win was the team's first in a World Cup knockout match since 1986, ending a 40-year drought. The host nation's success drew enormous crowds, with the city government estimating more than a million people in public viewing areas. Earlier in the tournament, a driver ploughed into celebrating fans in Cabo San Lucas, injuring at least 17.
