Fire breaks out near Tarsos
A wildfire erupted at approximately 17:30 on Monday, July 13, 2026 in an agroforestry zone close to the local community of Tarsos, within the Municipality of Levadeon in Viotia, central Greece. According to the Hellenic Fire Service, the blaze started in vegetation and, as of the latest reports, is burning away from residential areas and critical infrastructure. No evacuations have been ordered and the fire does not pose an immediate threat to homes or human life.
Firefighting response
Fire brigades moved quickly after the alert was raised. A total of 40 firefighters were dispatched, supported by two pedestrian units from the 4th EMAK (Special Disaster Response Unit) and nine fire engines. In addition, aerial firefighting operations began with two helicopters and two aircraft conducting repeated water drops over the affected terrain. The Municipality of Levadeon also contributed water tankers to assist the ground crews, reinforcing the containment effort.
Investigation launched
While the fire was still developing, authorities took steps to determine its origin. A team from the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes, based in Euboea, was directed to travel to the scene. Their task is to examine the conditions under which the fire started and to look for possible signs of deliberate ignition. The involvement of an arson investigation unit is a standard measure when a wildfire breaks out in rural or agroforestry areas during the summer season.
Current status
As of late afternoon, the fire remained active but was progressing away from populated zones. The Fire Service continued to monitor the situation and reported that the flames were not threatening houses or infrastructure. With aerial assets circling and ground crews working to create firebreaks, the expectation was that the blaze could be brought under control if weather conditions did not deteriorate. No further reinforcements had been requested at the time of the last briefing.
