What happened
A wildfire burning in the vicinity of Madrid swept through Nasa's Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex (MDSCC) on 24 July, forcing the agency to evacuate all personnel from the site. A Nasa spokesperson confirmed in a statement that the fire "crossed" the complex. The full extent of the damage is not yet known, and the agency said an assessment will be carried out "as soon as safety conditions permit."
All personnel were safely evacuated and any potential damage will be assessed as soon as safety conditions allow.
Immediate response
To maintain uninterrupted communication with its spacecraft, Nasa immediately transferred operations to its Goldstone complex in California. The spokesperson said this arrangement guarantees "continuity of service and uninterrupted support for communications with spacecraft." The handover means all current deep-space links are now being routed through the American site rather than the affected Spanish facility.
How the deep-space network works
The MDSCC is one of three complexes that together form the Deep Space Network (DSN), the backbone of Nasa's ability to command and receive data from missions across the solar system. The three sites are in Madrid, Goldstone (California), and Canberra (Australia). Nasa explains that this geographic spread ensures that as the Earth rotates, at least one antenna complex can always make contact with spacecraft regardless of their position in the sky. The Madrid site was the European leg of that triad. With it temporarily offline, the network is running on the remaining two nodes, with Goldstone carrying the load that Madrid would normally handle.
What is at stake
The DSN supports dozens of active missions, including the Voyager probes in interstellar space, the Perseverance rover on Mars, and the James Webb Space Telescope. Any prolonged outage at one of the three nodes reduces the network's margin for handovers between sites as the Earth turns. Nasa has not yet stated how long it expects Madrid to remain out of service or whether any scheduled communications passes were missed during the handover to California.
What comes next
Firefighting efforts around Madrid are ongoing, with multiple blazes active in the region. Nasa has not yet been able to send teams back into the complex to inspect the antennas, control buildings, and supporting infrastructure. A damage report will be published once the site is declared safe to re-enter. Until then, Goldstone will continue to cover the Madrid station's communication windows.
