Wildfire in Aldea del Fresno forces confinement of two towns in Madrid region
A wildfire on the M-510 highway triggered stay-at-home orders for Aldea del Fresno and Villamantilla on Wednesday afternoon, prompting the deployment of military and regional firefighting crews.
Outbreak along the M-510
A forest fire broke out on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, at approximately 14:30 near kilometre 52 of the M-510 road in Aldea del Fresno. The outbreak occurred in the Sierra Oeste district, a rural area in the southwestern sector of the Community of Madrid. The region had already sustained damage from forest fires during July 2026, including a blaze in the vicinity of the Pantano de San Juan reservoir recorded on 28 July. Emergency coordination agency 112 Comunidad de Madrid received reports of the ignition and alerted emergency units across the southwest district. The fire spread rapidly near the roadway, producing visible smoke plumes and prompting rapid intervention from regional forestry brigades.
Confinement of local populations
The proximity of the flames to residential zones led emergency services to order immediate confinement measures for the populations of Aldea del Fresno and neighbouring Villamantilla. Aldea del Fresno has 3,500 inhabitants, while Villamantilla counts 1,660 residents within its municipal boundaries. Civil protection authorities directed inhabitants of both towns to remain inside their homes, close doors and windows, and keep roads completely clear of private vehicle traffic. The confinement order aimed to prevent smoke inhalation among residents and secure open access routes for emergency vehicles arriving from adjacent operational bases.

Emergency classification and resources
In response to the advancing flames, the regional administration led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso raised the alert level to Situación Operativa 2 under the INFOMA wildfire emergency plan. The INFOMA framework, formally known as the Special Civil Protection Plan for Forest Fire Emergencies in the Community of Madrid, applies Situación Operativa 2 when fires pose a direct threat to population centres or non-forest property. This classification permits the mobilization of extraordinary regional and national assets. Extinction operations on the ground assembled 20 ground crews and five aerial units, bringing together personnel from the Community of Madrid Firefighters, Forestry Firefighters, and Forestry Agents.

Military activation and governmental appeals
As the blaze intensified, authorities activated the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) to support regional efforts. Military personnel and specialised vehicles deployed directly from their base in Torrejón de Ardoz to reinforce civilian firefighting teams. Simultaneously, the Government Delegation in Madrid issued public safety notices across social media channels, instructing motorists to avoid all non-essential travel toward the M-510 corridor and the wider Sierra Oeste area. Francisco Martín, the Government Delegate in Madrid, published an official appeal on X urging maximum vigilance while emergency teams worked to contain the front.
Closely monitoring the evolution of the fire in Aldea del Fresno that has prompted the activation of Operational Situation 2 of the INFOMA plan. Please exercise extreme caution in the area and always follow the instructions of security and emergency services.
Ongoing containment operations
Firefighting crews and military personnel focused their initial efforts on preventing the fire from crossing key perimeter lines around the two confined settlements. Aerial assets conducted water drops along the flank near kilometre 52 of the M-510, while ground crews established defensive barriers adjacent to threatened properties. The Government Delegation reiterated that residents in southwest Madrid should continue following official updates from 112 Comunidad de Madrid and obey instructions from emergency personnel on site.
