UFC cage fights come to the White House Sunday as Trump turns 80, storms loom
President Trump's summer of sports begins on Sunday with UFC Freedom 250, a full card of mixed martial arts bouts staged in a towering cage structure on the White House South Lawn, coinciding with his 80th birthday, Flag Day, and a forecast of severe thunderstorms.
A cage on the South Lawn
On Sunday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will stage 14 mixed martial arts contests inside a temporary 4,000-seat arena erected on the White House South Lawn. The structure, nicknamed "the Claw," is a red, white and blue steel frame that rises 92 feet tall (one report describes it as 154 feet tall) and spans 154 feet wide, dwarfing the executive mansion. UFC chief content officer Craig Borsari said the organization is receiving hourly weather updates and has contingency plans. The event is officially billed as part of the nation's 250th anniversary but falls on Trump's birthday, and he has called it "the greatest show on Earth."
- FIFA President Gianni Infantino awards Trump inaugural FIFA Peace Prize.
- Trump orders military mission in Venezuela to depose Nicolás Maduro.
- FIFA World Cup matches begin; media tour of the Claw arena is held.
- UFC Freedom 250 fight card scheduled on White House South Lawn; Trump turns 80.
- Trump scheduled to travel to Evian-les-Bains, France, for delayed G7 summit.
- Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar race planned around the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The audience and the weather
Around 4,000 ticket-holders will watch the fights inside the arena; another 125,000 are expected to gather on the Ellipse, where the card will be broadcast on a giant screen. The forecast calls for a high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) with 66% humidity, and the Storm Prediction Center warns that a "fairly potent" system sweeping through the Ohio Valley and Northeast could bring damaging winds, large hail, lightning, and a possible tornado to the Washington area Sunday afternoon and evening. The UFC has installed a canopy over the canvas and a custom cover to reduce heat on the fighting surface.
Sportswashing accusations
Critics have accused Trump of using major sports events to launder his administration's image amid domestic and international challenges. Nick Watanabe, a sport and entertainment management professor at the University of South Carolina, linked the practice to tactics used by authoritarian governments.
UFC parent company TKO says the event will cost more than $60 million and lose money, but TKO president Mark Shapiro called it "the greatest earned marketing tool of all time."We tend to talk about sportswashing when we talk about dictators or oil-rich countries.
International ripple effects
Global leaders have taken note of Trump's attachment to sports. FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarded Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize in December 2025. French officials delayed the start of a G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains to avoid clashing with Sunday's card.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a partnership deal with UFC president Dana White to promote mixed martial arts internationally. The way this is being presented is as a celebration, and really, to me and from my Midwestern roots, it looks like a county fair that they're holding on the White House lawn.
What comes after
Immediately after the fights, Trump is scheduled to travel to France for the G7 gathering. Later in the summer, an IndyCar Grand Prix race will run through the streets of the capital along the National Mall, part of the same "Freedom 250" initiative. U.S. officials also hope to use the sports momentum to promote the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
