The result
Vitória SC beat Marítimo 5-0 at the D. Afonso Henriques stadium in Guimarães on Friday, 23 October, in the opening match of matchday 9 of the Primeira Liga. The win ended a run of five league games without a victory for the hosts, who had been waiting since the 1-0 home win over Nacional on 23 August. Vitória had also won narrowly at ACDR Lamelas in the third round of the Taça de Portugal shortly before this match. Marítimo, who had gone six league games without a win, now have seven in a row, and they conceded five goals in one match for the first time. Vitória rise to 11th with eight points, while Marítimo, on the same total, slip to 13th.
Opening half
The first half was cagey, with few clear chances on either side. Toni Borevkovic deflected a corner towards goal, but Tomás Tavares cleared the ball off the line. Vitória broke the deadlock in the 38th minute, when Arnel Jakupović bent a direct free kick over the wall at half height and past Fran Vieites. Marítimo replied with a long-range effort from Igor Julião, which Lucas Furtado held with some difficulty. Vitória led 1-0 at the interval, and according to Notícias ao Minuto, Jakupović was the standout of the match, credited with a brace and an assist.
Second half collapse
The second half began with a goal almost immediately. Oumar Camara sent a cross towards Gustavo Silva, and Paulo Henrique, the Marítimo left-back, tried to clear it but put the ball into his own net in the 48th minute. Camara added the third goal in the 60th minute, after a first effort was blocked by Marítimo defenders and he followed up on the rebound. Jakupović scored again in the 76th minute, and Yeimar Mosquera headed in from a corner taken by Alanzinho in the 90th minute, his first goal for the club. Marítimo's Martín Tejón struck the crossbar with a left-foot shot in the 65th minute, but the visitors could not get a goal back.
Standings and form
For Marítimo, coached by Mitchell van der Gaag, the defeat extends a league run without a win to seven matches. Vitória, coached by Tiago Margarido, move up to 11th and away from the lower part of the table. A GoalPoint post on social media described Vitória as the second most shooting side in the league. Marítimo remain on eight points, and their position in the table is now 13th.
