Vinícius Júnior issues tearful apology after Brazil's World Cup exit: 'Frustration is enormous'
Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior posted an emotional social media message on Friday, six days after Brazil's shock round-of-16 defeat to Norway at the 2026 World Cup, promising to fight to return the Seleção to the summit of world football.
Brazil's shock exit
On July 5, Brazil suffered a stunning defeat to Norway in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, held across the United States, Canada and Mexico. German agency dpa reported a 1:2 scoreline, while Spanish outlets 20 minutos and LaVanguardia gave divergent accounts of 0-2 and 2-1 respectively. Erling Haaland scored a double according to 20 minutos. The loss extended Brazil's wait for a first World Cup title since 2002. The early elimination recalled the pain of the 2022 exit, when Brazil lost to Croatia in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals, a tournament in which Vinícius also featured.
Vinícius Júnior breaks silence
Six days later, on July 10, the 25-year-old Real Madrid forward posted a heartfelt message on his social media channels. He had remained silent, needing time to process the disappointment.
Almost four years later, I find myself again thinking about what to write after a World Cup disappointment. I saw so many people of all ages supporting me and believing in our dream, and it would be unfair to stay silent. But I needed a few days to reflect.

Vinícius, who scored four goals and provided one assist during the tournament, expressed how deeply the early elimination hurt. He emphasized the honour of representing Brazil and acknowledged that the squad was strong enough to go much further.
Apology and a promise
In the most emotional part of his statement, Vinícius directly addressed the fans.
Wearing the national team shirt is the greatest pride of my life, and going out of the World Cup in the round of 16 is a feeling that is very difficult to explain. I know how much I prepared, how focused I was, and how much I wanted this for you and for my family. The feeling of frustration is enormous. We had a team strong enough to achieve much more and we did not manage it. I apologize and I will fight for our dream of returning to the top of the world.
Other Brazilian reactions
Vinícius was not the first Seleção player to address the public after the defeat. Midfielder Bruno Guimarães, who missed a penalty when the game was still goalless, had already posted a message. The Newcastle player described the match as "the greatest pain" of his sporting life and vowed to come back "even stronger." His words also resonated widely on social media. Brazil now looks ahead to the next World Cup cycle, with the 2030 tournament on the horizon.
