Aston Villa sign goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and defender Matteo Ruggeri
Aston Villa have signed Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma for a fee of up to 35 million euros and left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid.
Double arrival at Villa Park
Aston Villa announced the permanent signings of Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma and Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. The Premier League club, managed by Unai Emery, completed the agreements ahead of their league opener against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. Media estimates value Suzuki's transfer fee at 30 million euros according to Transfermarkt, with potential add-ons pushing the total package up to 35 million euros (or 28 million Swiss francs). The 23-year-old goalkeeper agreed to a five-year contract at Villa Park, joining a goalkeeping department that includes Emiliano Martinez and Marco Bizot. Ruggeri, 24, arrives after recording 26 La Liga appearances and 15 Champions League matches during his spell in Spain.
Japan had previously seen goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi play in English football when he made 12 appearances for second-tier Portsmouth in 2001, though Kawaguchi never featured in the top tier.
Breakdown of the Paris negotiations
Suzuki's move to Birmingham followed the collapse of negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain four days earlier. The French club had agreed on terms for a transfer valued at 35 million euros with Parma, intending to send the goalkeeper on loan for the upcoming season. However, the deal disintegrated late in discussions when Suzuki's agents requested commission fees that the Paris club refused to meet. Aston Villa entered negotiations immediately after the French side withdrew, securing the player on a direct permanent arrangement.

Path from Saitama to the Premier League
Born in Newark, New Jersey, on 21 August 2002 to a Ghanaian-American father and a Japanese mother, Suzuki grew up in Saitama, Japan. He entered the youth system of Urawa Red Diamonds and became the youngest player to sign a professional contract with the club at age 16. After making his first-team debut in 2021 and earning the New Hero award in the Japanese League Cup, he moved to Belgian outfit Sint-Truidense on loan in August 2023. Sint-Truidense made the move permanent for 4 million euros before selling him for 8 million euros to Parma in July 2024.

Breaking barriers in European football
Suzuki became the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in Serie A, where he recorded 57 league appearances across two seasons. During his debut season in Italy under coach Cristian Chivu, Suzuki kept eight clean sheets in 37 appearances, before continuing under Carlos Cuesta the following season despite a hand fracture. His performances earned him a starting position for Japan at the 2026 World Cup, where he featured in four matches before a round of 16 exit against Brazil. Earlier in his career, following errors during the Asian Cup, Suzuki faced online abuse regarding his multi-ethnic background and addressed the hostility directly.
I've received [discriminatory comments] since elementary school, but I won't give in to them. I could have pretended to ignore [the messages], but I wanted to share my story in the hope that it could help not only soccer players, but athletes and young children with all kinds of roots.
Suzuki now becomes the first Japanese goalkeeper in Premier League history. Villa prepare for their opening domestic fixture on Sunday while managing competition for the primary goalkeeper position.
