Max Verstappen seeks qualifying setup gains after Dutch Grand Prix sprint
Max Verstappen noted single-lap pace deficits after failing to overtake Oscar Piastri during the Dutch Grand Prix sprint race at Zandvoort, while Charles Leclerc took second place from Lando Norris.
During the sprint race at Circuit Zandvoort, Charles Leclerc took second place after passing Lando Norris. Max Verstappen remained behind McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, unable to overtake into fifth position despite Piastri experiencing rear-end oversteer issues on the circuit.
Speaking to Viaplay after the sprint race, Verstappen explained that his car lacked single-lap speed compared to the leaders, though tyre degradation during longer runs remained manageable.
I could not keep up the pace over one lap, they drove away quite easily. The only positive was the race pace, where tyre degradation seemed reasonably under control.
Verstappen indicated that the team planned setup changes ahead of qualifying to reduce the performance deficit over a single lap. He also expressed satisfaction that rain arrived only after the sprint session had finished, noting that wet conditions would have caused avoidable disorder during a sprint race.
