Ugarte's knee injury at World Cup throws Manchester United's summer transfer plans into chaos
The Uruguayan midfielder was carried off on a stretcher in tears with a suspected knee ligament injury during Uruguay's 1-0 World Cup defeat to Spain, potentially derailing United's plan to offload him and fund new midfield signings.
Manuel Ugarte's World Cup campaign ended in tears on Friday when the Manchester United midfielder was stretchered off during Uruguay's group match against Spain in Guadalajara, Mexico. The 25-year-old appeared to catch his studs in the turf while colliding with teammate Mathias Olivera as they chased Spain's Pedri, twisting his knee awkwardly just before half-time. While Ugarte lay on the ground receiving treatment, Spain scored the game's only goal through Alex Baena, assisted by an error from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Uruguay's 1-0 defeat, followed by a late red card for Agustin Canobbio, confirmed a group-stage exit, with two points not enough to finish among the eight best third-placed teams.
We are anxiously awaiting news on Manuel Ugarte's knee injury after the Uruguayan midfielder was carried off on a stretcher in the defeat to Spain.
Transfer plans upended
United had made Ugarte available for sale this summer after a disappointing campaign in which he started just eight Premier League games and none after the home defeat to Leeds on 13 April. Under new coach Michael Carrick, the club prioritised a midfield overhaul and hoped to offload the Uruguay international, even at a reduced fee, to free wages and generate transfer funds. The board, now led by INEOS, had already agreed a deal with Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta upon the personal recommendation of Casemiro. Reports also pointed to advanced talks for another central midfielder, with Alex Scott mentioned as a possible fallback if competitors entered the race.
The knee injury, feared to be a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament, immediately throws that plan into doubt. Potential suitors in Italy and Turkey are expected to pull back, and a long recovery (initial estimates suggest up to 12 months) eliminates any prospect of a sale in the current window. Without the Ugarte proceeds, Manchester United's flexibility to pursue other targets, including a dedicated left-back, a starting-calibre forward and a backup goalkeeper, is severely reduced.
FIFA compensation and the financial gap
While the club will not recover a transfer fee, FIFA's Club Protection Programme could provide some relief. If Ugarte is sidelined for more than 28 days, Manchester United can claim compensation for his daily salary for up to one year. In the case of a full 12-month absence, the total reimbursement would reach approximately €6.7 million, effectively the player's annual wages. That sum, however, pales in comparison with the £50.8 million United paid Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 and the budget room that a permanent sale would have opened.
What comes next
Manchester United's medical staff are waiting for an official injury assessment from the Uruguayan national team before deciding on treatment and rehabilitation. Early indications point toward surgery and a lengthy physiotherapy programme, ruling the midfielder out for the entirety of the 2026-27 season. The setback not only complicates the club's transfer strategy but also halts any hope that Ugarte might relaunch his career through a move. Spain also suffered injury blows in the same match, with substitutes Yeremy Pino sustaining a suspected broken collarbone and Nico Williams limping after the final whistle.
