Udo Lindenberg hospitalized days after 80th birthday, cancels Gronau event and takes weeks-long break
German rock icon Udo Lindenberg has been admitted to a hospital in Hamburg, forcing the cancellation of a planned event in his hometown of Gronau and requiring a weeks-long health break on doctors' orders.
Hospitalization and cancelled event
German rock legend Udo Lindenberg has been hospitalized, just days after celebrating his 80th birthday on 17 May. The Brost-Stiftung, organizer of the 'Udo Lindenberg & Friends' event, announced on Friday that the musician is currently undergoing hospital treatment and will need to take a health break in the coming weeks on the advice of his doctors. The event, scheduled for 3 June in the Bürgerhalle in Gronau, Lindenberg's birthplace, has been cancelled as a result.
Udo Lindenberg befindet sich zurzeit in krankenhäuslicher Behandlung und kann leider nicht an der Veranstaltung teilnehmen. Er wird in den kommenden Wochen eine gesundheitliche Auszeit benötigen.
The foundation expressed deep regret, stating they had been looking forward to a special evening with Lindenberg and numerous companions. No official details about the exact nature of his health issues have been released.
What is known about his condition
According to reports in Bild and Hamburger Abendblatt, Lindenberg suffered a weakness attack on Wednesday and was initially treated in his suite at the Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg, where he has lived for years. He was subsequently admitted to the nearby AK St. Georg hospital in Hamburg, where he is undergoing cardiological checks. Sources from his entourage told the Hamburger Abendblatt that there is no need for serious concern.
Udos Fitnesszustand ist der eines 40- bis 50-Jährigen.
His personal trainer, Natalie Zimmermann, described his fitness level as that of a 40- to 50-year-old, noting that he exercises daily. The hustle and bustle surrounding his birthday celebrations may have contributed to his physical weakness.
Exhibitions continue as planned
Despite the hospitalization, the special exhibition 'Udo L. - aus dem Pott ins Hotel' at the rock'n'popmuseum in Gronau is not affected and will open as planned on 4 June, running until the end of 2026. The centerpiece is a faithful replica of his legendary hotel room from Hamburg's Hotel Atlantic, with items including a red sofa, carpet, and heater covers moved from Room 570 to Gronau. Another exhibition of his paintings and drawings in Werl, about 100 kilometers from Gronau, opened in April.
A celebrated career
Lindenberg is considered one of the most important pioneers of German-language rock music. His breakthrough came in 1973 with the album 'Alles klar auf der Andrea Doria', and he is known for hits like 'Sonderzug nach Pankow' and 'Cello'. In 2023, he achieved his first number-one single with 'Komet', a collaboration with rapper Apache 207. His albums 'Stark wie zwei' and 'Stärker als die Zeit' also reached number one, as did his 'MTV Unplugged' albums. In 1989, he received the Federal Cross of Merit for his contributions to understanding between East and West. Gronau made him an honorary citizen in 2016, and Hamburg followed in September 2022.
