
Romania issues air alert in Tulcea after early-morning radar detection of aerial targets near Ukraine border
Romanian air defense systems were placed on alert early Saturday after radars detected aerial targets close to the Ukrainian localities of Chilia and Ismail. No unauthorized airspace entry or ground impacts were reported during the 28-minute alert.
Detection and initial response
At 4:39 on Saturday, 11 July, Romanian military radar systems detected multiple aerial targets near Chilia and Ismail, two localities in Ukraine’s Odesa region, close to the border with Tulcea County. In response, the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) immediately placed air defense systems on alert and prepared an IAR 330 Puma SOCAT helicopter for takeoff.

Alerting the population
Two minutes later, at 4:41, the National Military Command Centre (nucleus) notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. A RO-Alert message was transmitted to residents of northern Tulcea County, warning them of the potential threat. The alert remained in effect for 28 minutes, with local authorities monitoring the situation in real time.
No incursion or damage
MApN later confirmed that no unauthorised aerial vehicle crossed into Romanian national airspace and no ground impact was recorded on Romanian territory. The alert officially ended at 5:07. Throughout the incident, the ministry maintained contact with allied structures and provided real-time updates.
