Trevor Nelson takes break from BBC Radio 2 shows after health issues; Vernon Kay pays tribute
The 62-year-old broadcaster disclosed he will step away from his weekday afternoon slot and Sunday 1Xtra show after follow-up tests advised by a routine check-up. Colleagues including Vernon Kay have sent messages of support.
Health announcement
Trevor Nelson, 62, posted on Instagram on Friday (26 June) that he is taking "a little break" from his Radio 2 weekday 2-4pm show and his Sunday Radio 1Xtra 11am-1pm slot. He had been absent all week. He explained that a routine check-up led to follow-up tests and that he wants to "deal with facts and not speculate."
After a routine check-up I was advised to have some follow up tests. As a result, I will be taking some further time off. As I'm sure you can appreciate with health issues, it's important to deal with facts and not speculate. So I'm concentrating on getting better, being back to 100% me and to getting back behind the mic and the decks.
Colleagues' tributes
Vernon Kay, who hosts the mid-morning show on Radio 2, praised Nelson on air as a "stalwart broadcaster" and recalled playing golf with him two weeks earlier, describing him as in a "buoyant mood." Kay added that the team "absolutely love him to bits."

Richie Anderson, who has been covering Nelson's slot, said: "Sending all the love in the world to our Trevor, we've got your back buddy." Lorna Clarke, BBC director of music, wished a speedy recovery and looked forward to his return whenever he is ready.
