
Transelectrica website glitch falsely showed Romania hitting over 8,000 MW electricity consumption for ten hours
Transelectrica, Romania's national electricity transmission operator, displayed inflated consumption figures on its website for roughly ten hours on 11 August 2026, falsely suggesting a record above 8,000 MW. The company said a technical glitch froze a production value, distorting automatically calculated consumption data.
False record on the public dashboard
On the evening of 11 August 2026, Transelectrica's real-time website appeared to show Romania's electricity consumption crossing the 8,000 MW threshold, with a peak of 8,183 MW displayed at 19:48. The same dashboard showed production of 5,873 MW, implying a gap of over 2,300 MW between domestic consumption and production. Several hours later, the company issued a clarification: the figures published on its website between approximately 11:00 and 21:00 did not correspond to real values in the National Electroenergetic System.

How the error arose
Transelectrica explained that around 11:00 one of the production values displayed on the site remained frozen at a constant level. Because the consumption indicator was calculated automatically by the publishing system from that production input, the frozen value propagated through the correlated calculations and produced an artificially rising consumption curve. The company stated the issue affected only the public display of data on its website.
A technical dysfunction of the real-time data publishing system on the Company's website generated erroneous values regarding the production, respectively the electricity consumption displayed publicly.
Real figures after correction
Once the data flows were restored and recalculated, the real maximum consumption for the day stood at 7,331 MW, nearly 850 MW below the alarmingly displayed figure of 8,183 MW. The corrected curves showed consumption and production evolving within normal parameters for a hot summer day. The displayed value of 8,183 MW therefore cannot be considered a genuine consumption record.

Grid stability unaffected
Transelectrica emphasised that the glitch was confined to the public-facing website and did not reflect the actual state of the National Electroenergetic System. The physical grid operated safely throughout the entire interval affected by the display bug. Technical support teams isolated the problem and cleaned the database after more than ten hours of dysfunction.
Remediation and republished data
Real-time data display was remediated starting at 21:00. From 22:20, Transelectrica republished corrected information for the entire affected interval, restoring clean production and consumption curves. The company confirmed the incident was solely a public-platform issue and not a functioning problem of the national grid.
