What happened
On Tuesday, 20 October, a drone fell onto a private property in Józefów, a village in the Nieporęt commune of Legionowo county north of Warsaw. Residents heard a loud bang in the afternoon, and emergency calls followed. The object was at first unidentified, but it soon emerged that the machine belonged to the Military Institute of Technical Armament (WITU) in Zielonka, which carries out research and development work. According to the reports, the institute's operators were running a series of training flights whose results were meant to feed into basic design work. Around 16:03 they lost contact with the aircraft, which then came down on the property. The drone was unarmed and carried no pyrotechnic payload.
Recovery and police account
Institute representatives travelled to the site, secured the drone and took it away from the private property. Warsaw capital police later reported that no one was injured and that no material losses or damage to property were found. Sub-inspector Marta Sulowska, the press officer of the Warsaw capital police headquarters, described the incident in these terms:
“We established that employees of the Military Institute of Technical Armament lost contact with the training machine. They arrived at the site very quickly, secured and removed this equipment.”
Village head Edyta Pietrzak-Waś later said the situation was under control and that there was no threat to residents. The cause of the loss of contact is to be established by the engineers working on the machine inside the institute, and the relevant services are also to examine the event.
Residents' reaction
Residents passed on word that the drone had come down on private land, and posts from people alarmed by the bang also appeared online. Several residents had already voiced concern about the institute's activity in the area. One local outlet has repeatedly reported on flare tests carried out in the surrounding countryside. The tests are part of the institute's ongoing work, and the reports do not link them to Tuesday's incident.
Wider drone activity
A separate incident in Lublin drew attention in the same period. naTemat reported that residents near the Zemborzyce Reservoir (Zalew Zemborzycki) flagged an unidentified object flying over on the weekend of 17 and 18 October, which prompted a night operation with soldiers, police and a helicopter. As of that report, no trace of the object had been found and no violation of Polish airspace had been confirmed. The same outlet recalled that in September it had reported a drone over Lithuania shot down by NATO fighter jets, and that in May a NATO fighter had downed a drone over Estonia. It also noted that drone testing has become routine and that the defence ministry treats drones as a priority, citing the Dron Legion MON initiative.
