Three German hikers die in separate Alpine falls on same day

Three separate tragedies

On Thursday, three German nationals died in unrelated mountain accidents in the Alps, police in Bavaria and Vorarlberg reported. The victims were a 76-year-old man from Berlin, a 63-year-old woman from Saxony-Anhalt, and a 37-year-old woman from the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district. Each incident unfolded on well-known hiking routes, illustrating the persistent hazards of high-altitude terrain even for experienced walkers.

Leitersteig descent

The Berlin man was descending the Leitersteig near Mittenwald in the Karwendel mountains with his wife when he lost his footing on a technically demanding section of the narrow path. He fell roughly 70 metres through extremely steep, partially near-vertical forest. His wife, who was walking behind him, lost sight of him and immediately dialled the emergency number. An alpine task force from the border police and the Mittenwald mountain rescue service located the man and began resuscitation efforts. The emergency doctor aboard the rescue helicopter Christoph 14 could only confirm his death. Police are investigating the exact cause but currently assume a tragic solo accident. A crisis intervention team from the mountain rescue service cared for the wife.

Fellhorngrat fall

In the Kleinwalsertal, a valley on the Austrian side of the Allgäu Alps, a 63-year-old woman from Saxony-Anhalt died while hiking on the Fellhorngrat. She slipped on a hiking path and fell approximately 60 metres down a scree gully. Rescue workers arrived quickly but could not revive her. The Fellhorngrat ridge is a popular destination for day hikers, offering sweeping views but also exposed, rocky sections that require sure-footedness.

Montscheinspitze fatality

The third victim, a 37-year-old woman from Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, had first cycled by mountain bike to a mountain hut and then set out on foot toward the Montscheinspitze in the Karwendel range, within the municipality of Eben am Achensee. A hiking group discovered her lifeless body in a gully during the evening. A doctor pronounced her dead at the scene, and her body was airlifted out by helicopter. Authorities have ordered an autopsy to clarify the circumstances of her death.

Rescue efforts and warnings

All three accidents triggered rapid responses from alpine rescue teams, but none of the victims could be saved. The incidents occurred independently on the same day, though there is no suggestion of any link. Mountain rescue organisations regularly caution hikers about the dangers of steep, crumbling paths and the need for appropriate footwear, helmets, and weather awareness. The three deaths add to a series of alpine accidents involving German nationals this summer, though comprehensive statistics are not yet compiled.
