Rhineland-Palatinate marks ten years of STEM strategy with over 30,000 students reached
Rhineland-Palatinate's educational network now includes eleven STEM regions, 400 partner bodies, and 147 certified schools following a decade-long drive to foster scientific skills among young people.
Origins and goals of the Rhineland-Palatinate STEM strategy
In November 2016, the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate initiated a comprehensive strategy to promote education in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology (MINT). The driving force behind the policy was the state education minister at the time, Stefanie Hubig of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), who created the MINT Round Table (Runder Tisch MINT). The programme was designed to build an educational continuum from early childhood centres and daycares through secondary schools and universities. State policymakers established the framework to spark sustainable interest in scientific and technological disciplines among children and teenagers. A central aim of the initiative is maintaining student engagement through key educational milestones, including the selection of vocational training programmes, university degrees, and professional career paths. Furthermore, state organizers directed particular attention toward girls and young women, emphasizing the ongoing requirement for female role models across technical sectors.
Regional infrastructure and project distribution
To deliver programmes locally, Rhineland-Palatinate established eleven distinct MINT regions alongside 23 regional STEM projects over the ten-year period. The state also created the central MINT-Hub Rheinland-Pfalz to coordinate initiatives across regional boundaries. A statewide network of regional sponsors (Regionalpaten) was set up to guarantee full geographic coverage across every single rural district (Landkreis) and independent city (kreisfreie Stadt). Within these regional clusters, multiple educational and professional actors coordinate their efforts to support emerging talent. Participating organizations include primary and secondary schools, universities, specialized research institutes, private companies, civic clubs, and trade associations.

Institutional partnerships and youth outreach
The cooperative framework in Rhineland-Palatinate includes more than 400 external partners that actively collaborate with local schools. These partners encompass higher education institutions, local municipalities, makerspaces, student research centres (Schülerforschungszentren), business associations, and chambers of commerce. Through these structured cooperative networks, institutions deliver hands-on technical workshops, science experiments, and mentorship projects. Data released by the state Ministry of Education indicates that these joint offerings have directly engaged more than 30,000 young people since the launch of the strategy. The broad distribution of partner institutions ensures that both urban and rural school communities gain access to laboratory facilities and technical guidance.
School certifications and the national excellence network
Schools throughout Rhineland-Palatinate have sought external certification to establish verified STEM profiles. Under the nationwide initiative MINT Zukunft schaffen, educational institutions can apply for the status of a MINT-friendly school (MINT-freundliche Schule). These certifications remain valid for a period of three years before requiring renewal. Since 2011, 147 schools in Rhineland-Palatinate have earned the MINT-friendly distinction. Additionally, 21 academic secondary schools (Gymnasien) in the state participate in the network run by the Association of Mathematical and Scientific Excellence Centres at Schools (MINT-EC). MINT-EC is a non-profit association based in Berlin, founded in 2000 to foster advanced secondary education in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology.
