Switzerland tops Group B as Canada reaches World Cup last 16 for the first time despite 2-1 loss
Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 in Vancouver to finish first in Group B, but the co-hosts still made history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. Bosnia-Herzegovina kept its hopes alive with a 3-1 win over Qatar in Seattle.
Switzerland claimed top spot in Group B of the 2026 World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Canada at BC Place in Vancouver on Wednesday. The result, combined with Bosnia-Herzegovina's 3-1 win against Qatar in Seattle, sent both the Swiss and the Canadians through to the round of 16, while Bosnia must wait to see if its four points are enough to advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
Switzerland secures top spot
Ruben Vargas opened the scoring one minute into the second half, tapping in a cross from Johan Manzambi. Manzambi then doubled the lead in the 57th minute with a shot that Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau could not hold. Promise David pulled one back for Canada in the 76th minute, but Switzerland held on to finish with seven points, three clear of both Canada and Bosnia. The Swiss have now reached the knockout stage at four consecutive World Cups.
Canada's historic achievement
Despite the defeat, Canada advanced because of a superior goal difference over Bosnia, both on four points. It is the first time the Canadian men's team has qualified for the World Cup round of 16. The co-hosts had opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and a 6-0 rout of Qatar, the country's first ever World Cup win. Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick in that match, was kept quiet by the Swiss defence and saw his best chance blocked by Nico Elvedi in the 67th minute.
Bosnia keeps hopes alive
Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Qatar 3-1 at Lumen Field to finish third in the group on four points. The Bosnians, appearing in only their second World Cup, now need to be among the eight best third-placed sides across all groups to reach the last 16. Qatar, which drew 1-1 with Switzerland in its opener, ended the group with a single point and is eliminated at the group stage for the second straight tournament.

Manzambi shines again
Twenty-year-old Swiss winger Johan Manzambi was the standout performer, setting up Vargas's goal and scoring his third of the tournament. He had previously come off the bench to score twice against Bosnia. His direct running caused problems for the Canadian backline throughout the evening.
What comes next
Switzerland will play a best third-placed team in Vancouver in nine days, aiming to break a round-of-16 ceiling that has stood since 1954. Canada travels to Los Angeles for a Sunday match against the runner-up from Group B, which will be South Korea, the Czech Republic or South Africa. Bosnia must wait until the group stage concludes to learn its fate.
