Taylor Swift becomes youngest woman inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame at 36
Taylor Swift made history Thursday, becoming the youngest woman ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at age 36, a record second only to Stevie Wonder. The US pop star attended the private New York ceremony alongside this year's class of nine honorees, including Alanis Morissette and KISS.
Induction at 36
Taylor Swift walked the red carpet at a New York hotel on Thursday, wearing a strapless black dress with floral motifs, to become the youngest woman ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The 36-year-old US pop star is the second-youngest inductee overall, behind Stevie Wonder, who was 32 when honored in 1983. The previous female record was held by Carole Bayer Sager, inducted in 1987 at age 43.
Artists become eligible for the Hall of Fame 20 years after their first commercial release. Swift’s debut single, “Tim McGraw,” arrived in June 2006, making her eligible in 2026. She personally attended the private, non-televised ceremony.

A career of shapeshifting
Since her debut, Swift has recorded 12 albums spanning country, pop, and folk, earning 14 Grammy Awards, including a record four Album of the Year trophies. She also holds the record for the most top-10 hits on Billboard among female artists. The Hall of Fame’s website praised her “ability to shapeshift as a songwriter, to inhabit different sonic landscapes and write as credibly in the world of one genre as she does another.”
It also represents the boldness and bravery of her artistry: to explore new frontiers when the most practical next step would be to keep mining the material that has gotten you the success in the first place.
Worldwide, she has sold over 250 million album-equivalents. Her latest tour, “The Eras Tour” (2023–2024), grossed an estimated $2 billion.
The class of 2026
The Hall also inducted nine songwriters this year, including Canadian singer Alanis Morissette, KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, and film soundtrack hitmaker Kenny Loggins. Record producer Walter Afanasieff was among the honorees. On the red carpet, Stanley told AFP, “It doesn’t suck. It’s really hard to digest the idea. I certainly don’t consider myself in that rarified air of some of the writers, but if you wanna be in that club, I’m there.”
Loggins, whose credits include “Footloose” and “Danger Zone” from Top Gun, called the honor “the culmination of a lifetime writing.”
It’s a great honor and I appreciate it.
Life beyond the charts
Swift’s personal life continues to draw headlines. She is engaged to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and multiple reports suggest the couple will marry on July 3 in New York. She was spotted Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden attending an NBA Finals game, adding fuel to the speculation.
