Northern Germany braces for midweek storms as DWD warns of gale-force gusts along the North and Baltic Sea coasts

A stretch of calm summer weather across northern Germany is set to break midweek as a low-pressure system pushes in from the northwest, bringing showers, isolated thunderstorms, and gale-force winds to coastal regions. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued forecasts covering Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony, Bremen, and North Rhine-Westphalia, warning of a sharp deterioration from Wednesday onward.

Tuesday's calm before the front

Tuesday offers a final window of settled conditions. In Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, the day begins with widespread sunshine before denser clouds roll in from the North Sea during the afternoon, though most areas stay dry. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern sees plenty of sun with only isolated showers possible. Temperatures reach 19 degrees on Sylt and Helgoland, climbing to 24 degrees in Lauenburg and parts of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In Lower Saxony and Bremen, the mercury hits 19 degrees along the coast and up to 24 degrees inland. North Rhine-Westphalia expects 21 to 24 degrees under mostly clear to partly cloudy skies, with rain possible only in the northeast. Winds remain light to moderate from the northwest, picking up along the coasts toward evening.

Wednesday's stormy turn

Conditions deteriorate markedly on Wednesday. The DWD forecasts showers spreading from the North Sea, with isolated thunderstorms possible in the southeast of Lower Saxony. Coastal areas face the brunt of the change: fresh to strong northwest winds with gale-force gusts are expected along the North Sea, while the Baltic coast also sees winds freshening to stormy at times. Maximum temperatures drop to between 18 and 21 degrees across Lower Saxony, Bremen, and the northern states. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the day starts heavily overcast before becoming more variable, with occasional light rain or drizzle moving in from the northwest and highs of 19 to 22 degrees.

Overnight conditions

Tuesday night into Wednesday sees clouds thicken and showers spread inland from the North Sea. Inland areas of Lower Saxony and Bremen cool to between 10 and 14 degrees, while the islands hold milder lows around 16 degrees. The northwest wind strengthens markedly along the coast and turns increasingly gusty. Wednesday night into Thursday brings no relief: the unsettled pattern persists with further showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Late-week outlook

Thursday remains dominated by cloud and scattered showers or thunderstorms across the northern states, with temperatures again reaching 18 to 21 degrees. The northwest wind eases slightly to light or moderate inland but stays fresh and gusty along the coast. North Rhine-Westphalia sees the best chance of improvement: skies turn variably cloudy with larger clearings possible in the southwest, and only isolated weak showers are expected, with most places staying dry. Temperatures hold steady at 19 to 22 degrees.

The DWD's forecasts indicate the most persistent hazard is the wind along the North Sea coastline, where gale-force gusts are expected to continue through Wednesday and into Thursday.
