Bavarian thunderstorms down trees, train carrying 70 passengers hits fallen trunk near Erlangen
Severe thunderstorms swept across Franconia and the Upper Palatinate on Tuesday, toppling trees and causing a passenger train to collide with a fallen trunk near Erlangen. All 70 passengers were evacuated without injury.
A line of intense thunderstorms moved through northern Bavaria on 14 July 2026, triggering hundreds of weather alerts and several emergency call-outs. The German Weather Service (DWD) had warned of dangerous conditions hours before the first cells arrived. Police in Middle Franconia reported multiple operations, and a regional train struck a tree in the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt.
Severe weather warnings
The DWD issued level-three-of-four warnings for all three Franconian administrative districts and the Upper Palatinate on Tuesday afternoon. Meteorologists cautioned that the storms could produce frequent lightning, large hail, flooding of cellars and, critically, gust fronts capable of uprooting trees. The warnings covered 44 districts across the region. Officials urged residents to avoid forested areas and to secure loose objects outdoors.
Storm strikes Franconia and Upper Palatinate
The first thunderstorm cells reached the Nuremberg metropolitan area during the afternoon. Police headquarters in Middle Franconia confirmed several emergency deployments but said a full damage survey was not yet available by early evening. Officers noted that trees had fallen in several locations around Erlangen. Further east, thunderstorms passed over Regensburg; a police spokesperson there said no severe damage had been reported as of Tuesday evening.
Train collides with fallen tree
The most dramatic incident occurred on a railway line in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district, where a passenger train struck a tree that had been brought down by the storm. News5 reported that about 70 travellers were on board. All were able to disembark safely, and no injuries were recorded. Emergency crews attended the scene, and the passengers were transferred to alternative transport. The train sustained unspecified damage, and the line was temporarily closed while the obstruction was cleared.
Aftermath and forecast
By late evening the thunderstorm activity was forecast to ease. The DWD expected the unstable air mass to move eastwards, with a clearing trend setting in overnight. Wednesday’s outlook called for significantly calmer weather across Bavaria, with a mix of sunshine and fair-weather cloud. Police in Middle Franconia said a more complete tally of wind damage, including further fallen trees and possible flooding, would be compiled on Wednesday morning.
