
Romania under yellow and orange storm warnings: torrential rain, hail and strong winds forecast for 14 counties
The National Meteorological Administration issued nowcasting alerts on Saturday afternoon for parts of 14 counties, warning of torrential showers, frequent lightning and hail.
Romania’s National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued yellow and orange code warnings on Saturday afternoon, 18 July 2026, for severe storms across multiple counties. Yellow code alerts cover areas in Covasna, Brașov, Harghita, Sălaj, Cluj, Satu Mare, Bistrița-Năsăud, Caraș-Severin, Arad and Hunedoara, where forecasters expect local torrential showers of 15–25 litres per square metre, lightning and small hail of 1–2 centimetres. Wind gusts may reach 50–60 km/h in some warned zones. Orange code warnings, indicating more intense phenomena, target specific localities in Maramureș, Satu Mare, Covasna and Gorj counties. In these areas, rainfall accumulations of 25–40 l/m² are expected, along with frequent lightning and hail measuring 2–4 cm. The warnings are nowcasting alerts valid for up to six hours and are updated as conditions evolve.
