Sporting CP signs Ibrahima Ba from Famalicão for €20m, release clause set at €80m

The signing

Sporting CP announced the signing of Ibrahima Ba from Famalicão on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Senegalese centre-back has put pen to paper on a contract that runs until 2031, with a release clause set at €80 million. The transfer fee is reported at around €20 million, though the club did not officially disclose the figure. Ba arrives as a direct replacement for Ousmane Diomande, whose move to Nottingham Forest is imminent.

Diomande's departure

The signing was triggered by Nottingham Forest's strong push for Ousmane Diomande. The Premier League club, now managed by Oliver Glasner, is close to finalising a deal worth around €40 million for the Ivorian defender. Glasner has tracked Diomande since his time at Crystal Palace. With Diomande's exit not yet formally completed, Sporting moved quickly to secure Ba, who had been identified as the top target on a shortlist of foreign-based players.

A rapid operation

Ba's move to Lisbon unfolded with unusual speed. Earlier in the transfer window, he had been on the verge of joining Strasbourg, but the deal collapsed after he failed the French club's medical. Sporting, aware of the issue, conducted reinforced medical exams in Lisbon and found no cause for concern. Ba travelled to the capital immediately after the clubs reached an agreement, missing Famalicão's friendly against Arouca on Wednesday morning. He passed the medical, signed the contract, and was presented the same day.

Player profile

Ba describes himself as "a fast and physically strong player who defends well." Standing 1.90 metres tall, he is a commanding presence in the air and scored one goal last season, against Nacional, in 24 appearances for Famalicão. He joined the Portuguese club in 2024 on a free transfer from Valenciennes and still had four years remaining on his contract. Despite interest from Benfica, who did not meet Famalicão's asking price, Ba chose Sporting. He has yet to earn a senior cap for Senegal but is regarded as one of the country's most promising defensive talents.

Defensive reshuffle

Ba's arrival gives head coach Rui Borges five centre-back options: Eduardo Quaresma, Gonçalo Inácio, Zeno Debast, Bruno Ramos, and the new signing. However, the squad may see further changes. Gonçalo Inácio, a left-footed defender with a €60 million release clause, is open to a move abroad after making 46 appearances last season. If he departs, Sporting would likely return to the market for another left-sided centre-back, as none of the remaining options are naturally left-footed. Youngster Eduardo Felicíssimo, who impressed during pre-season, could also provide cover, though he is primarily a defensive midfielder.
