Sporting survive late scare to beat Vitória SC 3-2, Borges warns of growing pains

First-half dominance, second-half fade

Borges described two sharply different halves of play. In the first, Sporting pressed high and prevented Vitória from settling on the ball or approaching the home goal. The coach credited the intensity for the quality of the goals scored. After the interval, however, the team's energy dropped and the players became, in his words, permissive and soft. Borges acknowledged that the opposition deserved some credit for gaining momentum after pulling a goal back to make it 3-1. He also noted that Vitória did not create many clear chances, relying on long balls and competing for first and second balls, areas where Sporting needed to be more competitive.

We started to get a bit wobbly and the lads started to get into distrust. In the second half the energy drops and we became very permissive, soft, and in tight spaces we had reactions that weren't as strong.

Growing pains for a rebuilt squad

The coach called the second-half wobble growing pains but stressed the need for rapid improvement. He pointed out that a team leading 3-0 should not finish the match at 3-2 with lingering uncertainty. Borges also acknowledged that Sporting is undergoing a reconstruction after multiple squad changes, and that the current team's quality will not match that of last season or the one from two years ago. He urged the players and staff to identify what needs to improve to avoid repeating such moments of doubt, calling it part of a collective process shaped by the turnover in personnel.

Substitutions and fan support

Asked whether the substitutions contributed to the team's drop in performance, Borges dismissed the connection. He noted that the changes were made when Sporting were already under pressure at 3-1, calling it a coincidence. The coach said the intent was always to inject new energy and intensity, acknowledging that it works sometimes and not others, and crediting the opponent on occasion. On the supporters, Borges recalled the positive atmosphere during Sporting's title-winning campaign and asked fans to back the team through difficult stretches, not just when the football flows. He added that the distrust was natural given what happened in the first matchday, and expressed confidence that the team would improve and keep the fans on their side for the full 90 minutes.

When Sporting were champions, the energy was very positive, you could feel a very good atmosphere. And in these moments it's important for the fans to support, that's part of it. But we also have to pull them along.
