Spain beats host Germany 83-53 in FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup opener

Spain returned to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup after eight years, facing host Germany in front of more than 12,000 spectators at Uber Arena in Berlin. Head coach Miguel Méndez led a roster where 11 of the 12 players were making their tournament debuts. Spain opened the Group A contest with a 10-4 run, with all five starters scoring within the first three minutes of play. Relying on early accuracy, Spain converted six of its first seven three-point attempts, including three from María Conde, to build a 24-10 lead. German head coach Olaf Lange called a timeout with 3:47 remaining in the opening quarter to halt the run, switching Germany to a zone defense. A scoring drought of more than three minutes followed until Leonie Fiebich converted a three-point play, leaving the score at 24-13 at the end of the first period.

First-half dominance and rebounding

Spain maintained offensive momentum in the second quarter through ball movement and interior rebounding. Forwards Megan Gustafson and Raquel Carrera helped neutralize Germany's height advantage inside against Nyara Sabally (1.96 m), Marie Gülich (1.95 m), and Luisa Geiselsöder (1.93 m). Point guard Iyana Martín orchestrated the offense with transition passes, assisting Carrera on a 6-0 run to move the score to 34-16. With 3:17 left in the half, center Awa Fam sank a three-pointer to push the lead to 44-20, prompting Méndez to call a timeout. Despite an offensive surge from Sabally, Spain entered halftime ahead 50-24, holding a 26-point margin. Conde finished the first half shooting four of six from three-point range.

María Conde reflected on the team's preparation and execution after the game:

We are very happy, it was a match we had circled on the calendar, against the host, and we delivered. We try to attack advantages, find open shots, and feed the post players. That is what we worked on in preparation and today it went well, although there will be days when they will not go in.

Second-half control and group outlook

Germany opened the third quarter with a 4-0 run through Emma Eichmeyer and Geiselsöder, but Spain countered with scoring contributions from Fam and Conde. Spanish bench players, including Mariona Ortiz, Paula Ginzo, Maite Cazorla, Elena Buenavida, Lola Pueyo, and Alicia Flórez, maintained defensive pressure against the German lineup. Spain ended the third quarter leading 65-39 before extending the gap to as many as 32 points in the final period. Fam concluded the contest with 17 points and a team-high 25 valuation rating, while Carrera recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Conde added 13 points to secure the 83-53 victory.

Iyana Martín spoke about the squad's focus following the opening victory:

We had a dream debut. We want to enjoy, to work, we are 12 players with a very clear objective.

Spain moved to the top of Group A following the opening round of fixtures in Berlin. Méndez rotated his lineup during the fourth quarter ahead of a quick turnaround in the schedule. Spain plays its second group match against Mali on Saturday, before concluding Group A play against Japan on 7 September.
