Police investigate murder-suicide hypothesis after four family members found dead in Skawina
On Friday afternoon, firefighters forced entry into a second-floor apartment on Niepodległości Street and discovered the bodies of a 35-year-old man, his 27-year-old wife, their eight-day-old daughter, and the baby's 59-year-old grandmother. Polish police are investigating a possible murder-suicide, according to unofficial media reports.
Discovery on Friday afternoon
On 3 July 2026, around 15:14, the fire brigade in Skawina received a call to assist police with a forced entry at an apartment on Niepodległości Street. Captain Hubert Ciepły, spokesman for the Małopolska provincial fire brigade, said firefighters arrived four minutes later. After using a ladder to peer through a second-floor window, they spotted blood and immediately forced the door together with police officers. Inside they found the bodies of a man, two women, and an infant. The apartment was then handed over to police and the prosecutor's office.
After four minutes the fire brigade was on site. Initially, using a ladder, because it was on the second floor, firefighters tried to look through a window to see whether anyone was in the apartment. However, from the second window they noticed blood and the decision was made immediately to force entry. The door was broken down. Together with police officers we went inside. Inside, four bodies were discovered: a child, two women, and a man.

Police spokeswoman Iwona Szelichiewicz told Polsat News that the women were aged 59 and 27, the man 35, and the newborn. The grandfather had been unable to contact his daughter and son-in-law, whose child was born just eight days earlier. The grandmother had come to help care for the newborn.
Around 3:15 pm on Friday, the services were alerted by a man who said he could not enter the apartment of his daughter and son-in-law, whose child was born eight days earlier. The baby's grandmother, who was helping with care, was also there.
Unofficial murder-suicide hypothesis
Radio Eska reporter Jakub Krzyżak, citing unofficial sources, reported that investigators are considering whether the 35-year-old man killed his family before taking his own life. The scene was described as horrific, with blood covering most of the room. The prosecutor's office has not yet confirmed this version. The family had lived in the apartment for five years, and no police interventions or complaints had been recorded during that time.
Community background
Neighbors told local media the family had moved to Skawina, a town neighboring Kraków, about a year to a year and a half earlier. They were Polish citizens and were described as quiet. The apartment is on the second floor of a multi-unit building in the Stare Miasto housing estate. The entire area was cordoned off by emergency vehicles as police and prosecutors gathered evidence. Official cause of death and a motive have not been released.
