Head-on collision in Elis leaves six injured including two children after car overturns

Head-on crash on the Pyrgos-Kyparissia National Road

A serious traffic accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, 30 September 2026, on the National Road connecting Pyrgos and Kyparissia in the Peloponnese region of Elis. Two passenger cars were involved in a violent head-on collision situated at a bend near the roadway exit leading from Kato Samiko toward Lake Kaiafas. According to preliminary collision findings, one of the vehicles had been travelling northwards along the route from Zacharo toward Pyrgos. That car crossed over the dividing line into the opposing traffic stream, directly striking a second vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The force of the collision caused one of the two passenger cars to overturn onto the asphalt, while a vehicle fire ignited immediately after the impact.

Six casualties and passenger extrication

A total of six individuals sustained injuries in the collision, including two children who were travelling inside the vehicles. A female passenger seated in the front co-driver seat of the northbound car suffered severe trauma upon impact. Responding firefighters had to carry out an extrication procedure on the damaged vehicle frame to free her from the cabin before transferring her to waiting ambulance crews. In the second vehicle, which carried a couple from Germany, both individuals were removed from the vehicle by rescue personnel. Attending emergency workers determined that the female passenger in that car had sustained bleeding in the abdominal area. All six injured individuals were transported by National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) ambulances to Krestena Hospital for initial examination and medical treatment.

Rapid action by off-duty first responders

Before primary emergency dispatch units could arrive at the crash location, three off-duty public service workers took immediate action to assist the injured motorists. An off-duty female EKAB rescuer, who had already completed her regular work shift, stopped her car at the scene after coming upon the wreckage. She provided urgent first aid and medical care to the six injured individuals until incoming ambulances arrived. Concurrently, an off-duty police officer and an off-duty firefighter who were travelling past the site also stopped to help. The two off-duty officers directed approaching vehicles safely around the overturned car and extinguishing wreckage, preventing secondary collisions along the national highway until active-duty police units reached the scene.

Fire containment and official investigation

Fire Service crews reached the site shortly after the collision occurred, quickly putting out the fire in the affected vehicle before it could spread further across the roadway. Firefighters also completed the mechanical extraction operations for the trapped passengers, using specialised cutting equipment and coordinating directly with waiting ambulance teams. Additional police patrols arrived to establish comprehensive traffic management measures on the national road and secure the perimeter around the scattered debris. Officers from the local traffic department have initiated a formal inquiry to investigate the technical road conditions, driver visibility on the bend, and the factors that led the northbound car to veer into opposing traffic.
