Sinner faces qualifier Mochizuki in Wimbledon last 16 as Djokovic also in action
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner meets Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki for a place in the quarter-finals, while Novak Djokovic opens Centre Court against Roman Safiullin.
Sinner's fifth Wimbledon last 16
Jannik Sinner reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the fifth time, matching Nicola Pietrangeli's record for an Italian man. The world No. 1 and defending champion defeated Jenson Brooksby in straight sets (6-4, 6-3, 6-4) in the third round. Sinner had previously eliminated Miomir Kecmanovic and Nuno Borges.
Mochizuki's unexpected run
Shintaro Mochizuki, ranked 151st, came through qualifying and then beat three main-draw opponents: Basing, Quinn, and Rafa Jodar. The 23-year-old Japanese player won the Wimbledon junior title in 2019, beating Carlos Alcaraz in the junior finals, but had struggled on the ATP Tour this season, with only six wins since November 2025 before arriving at the All England Club.
It's a strange feeling playing Sinner at Wimbledon, especially this year. I wasn't winning much before coming here and I don't know how I'm managing to win these matches. I'm excited but at the same time it feels a bit weird to be here in the last 16. I just want to keep enjoying it.
Djokovic also in action
Novak Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, opens the Centre Court programme against Russian Roman Safiullin. Djokovic leads their head-to-head 3-0 and has dropped only one set en route to the last 16, beating Tommy Paul, Yibing Wu, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Arthur Rinderknech. Safiullin, a qualifier, upset Andrey Rublev and others to reach this stage.
Centre Court schedule
The Sinner-Mochizuki match is the third on Centre Court on Sunday 5 July. Play begins at 14:30 CEST with Djokovic vs Safiullin, followed by Aryna Sabalenka versus Naomi Osaka. Sinner and Mochizuki are expected on court between 18:00 and 19:00 CEST, depending on the length of the earlier matches.
