AUR leader George Simion launches suspension proceedings against Romanian President Nicușor Dan, demands PM appointment this week
AUR leader George Simion announced the start of proceedings to suspend President Nicușor Dan on Tuesday, demanding the president appoint a prime minister this week amid a political deadlock.
The announcement
George Simion, leader of the AUR party, announced on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, that his party is launching the process to suspend President Nicușor Dan. The declaration was posted on Facebook alongside a photo of AUR's national council meeting in Alexandria, Teleorman county.
We are starting the proceedings for the suspension of Nicușor Dan! Today and tomorrow we are coming with many good news from the extraordinary meeting of the AUR National Council.
Simion also gave the president an ultimatum.
We summon Nicușor Dan to appoint a prime minister this week, according to constitutional obligations!
Political deadlock
The move comes after President Nicușor Dan announced he would not name a prime minister on June 30, the last day of the current parliamentary session. Dan said he is waiting for parliamentary parties to agree on a common candidate before making a nomination.
Simion had previously warned that AUR in government was "the only solution" and that if the president did not comply, he should be suspended.
AUR in government! It is the only solution! If N. Dan does not comply, he must be suspended.
Suspension procedure
To initiate suspension proceedings, one-third of all MPs must sign the request, a threshold AUR does not meet alone. Support from lawmakers of other factions would be necessary. If the request reaches parliament, a vote of half plus one of all MPs (233) is required to suspend the president. A subsequent referendum would then need to validate the dismissal, with at least 30% voter turnout to be valid.
Senator Petrișor Peiu, leader of AUR senators, said the initiative should be supported by other parties as well.
Previous threats
Simion had already announced a signature collection campaign a month ago. Today's declaration marks a formal start to the suspension push, though the party lacks the parliamentary numbers to carry it through on its own.
