Drones rattle Poland as Sweden counts votes and Trump rejects AI brakes

The night brought a familiar European anxiety closer to NATO territory, as Russian drones struck transport and fuel targets near Poland. Politics elsewhere looked just as narrow, with Sweden separated by one parliamentary seat and Washington split between racing China and slowing AI.

AEMET forecasts showers for Madrid on Tuesday, temperatures to climb across Spain by weekend

Spain's state meteorological agency AEMET predicts possible showers and thunderstorms in the Madrid region on Tuesday, while most other areas will see clear or partly cloudy skies. Temperatures are expected to rise steadily through the week, approaching 40°C in some inland cities by Sunday.

Tuesday's outlook

AEMET forecasts a mix of conditions across Spain on Tuesday, 16 June. In the Madrid community, skies will start partly cloudy with convective cloud building in the afternoon, bringing a chance of showers and storms, particularly in the Sierra highlands and the eastern half of the region. Maximum temperatures will range between 31 and 34°C, with lows of 15 to 17°C. Light variable winds will prevail, shifting to a southerly component by the afternoon.

In the north, Vitoria-Gasteiz will see early cloud clearing to a mostly sunny day, with a high of 30°C and a low of 12°C. A Coruña will begin very cloudy but clear by evening; temperatures will reach 22°C with a mild 16°C low. Along the Mediterranean coast, Benidorm expects clear skies and a high of 27°C, feeling like 28°C, while Sabadell in Catalonia will be clear to partly cloudy with a high of 34°C.

Central and southern cities will also see varied conditions. Cuenca will have partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of afternoon storms, a high of 30°C and a low of 15°C. Cádiz will start cloudy, then gradually clear from late afternoon, with temperatures between 21 and 25°C. Nearby Jerez de la Frontera will be cloudy in the morning but clear by midday, reaching 31°C after a low of 18°C.

Midweek warming trend

On Wednesday, most locations will enjoy clear or sunny skies. Temperatures will rise notably: Vitoria-Gasteiz jumps to 34°C, Jerez to 36°C, Cuenca to 33°C, and Cádiz to 31°C. Benidorm will climb to 30°C, while A Coruña remains cooler at 23°C. Lows will also edge upward, with many cities staying above 15°C overnight.

Thursday continues the warm, settled pattern. Precipitation is unlikely almost everywhere. Madrid's maximum will reach 37°C alongside isolated afternoon showers, while inland areas like Cuenca and Vitoria-Gasteiz will see highs of 33 and 35°C respectively. Coastal spots such as Cádiz (30°C) and A Coruña (24°C) stay milder.

Weekend heat builds

AEMET warns that the official start of summer will bring intense heat. By Saturday, many inland cities will record maximums above 35°C: Jerez 37°C, Cuenca 35°C, Vitoria-Gasteiz 36°C. Sunday will be even hotter, with temperatures approaching or exceeding 39°C in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Jerez, and Cuenca. Madrid may see 40°C. Coastal areas remain more moderate, with Cádiz at 32°C and Benidorm around 32°C. Winds will be light and variable, offering little relief.
