45-year-old dies one month after shoulder procedure in Radom hospital, prosecutor appoints expert panel
A 45-year-old man from Pionki died in February after losing consciousness during shoulder dislocation reduction at a Radom emergency ward. The case surfaced via an anonymous paramedic tip, and prosecutors have now appointed forensic experts.
How the patient came to the emergency room
On 10 January 2026, a 45-year-old resident of Pionki near Radom visited the Emergency Department (SOR) of the Mazowiecki Szpital Specjalistyczny in Radom with a dislocated shoulder. According to investigators, the patient was then given general anaesthesia without an anaesthesiologist present and without vital-sign monitoring equipment. Shortly after the procedure, the man lost consciousness.
The prosecution has appointed a team of forensic experts who will assess whether the medical procedures applied at the hospital were carried out in accordance with medical standards.
He was subsequently moved to the intensive care unit (OIOM). At the beginning of February, he was transferred to a long-term care facility in Legionowo, where he died after just one day. His body had been cremated, making an autopsy impossible and forcing investigators to rely solely on medical records and other collected evidence.
The anonymous tip and early investigation
The case came to light thanks to an anonymous notification signed by paramedics working at the emergency ward. In February, the head of the Radom-Wschód District Prosecutor's Office, Cezary Ołtarzewski, stated that the letter pointed to irregularities in the administration of drugs and the intimidation of staff by the doctor performing the procedure. The daily Gazeta Wyborcza was the first to report the story.
Prosecutor's expert team
Nearly five months later, the District Prosecutor's Office in Radom escalated the inquiry. Spokesperson Aneta Góźdź announced the formation of a forensic panel that will include specialists in emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, and orthopaedics. The panel will determine whether the patient was exposed to a direct risk of death or severe health impairment due to improper diagnosis and treatment, ultimately resulting in his unintended demise. Witnesses (doctors, nurses, and support staff) are currently being interviewed, and the medical documentation is being supplemented.
Broader concerns about the hospital
The Mazowiecki Szpital Specjalistyczny, run by the Mazovian Voivodeship authorities under Marshal Adam Struzik, has faced repeated allegations of understaffing in its emergency department. A prior inspection by the National Health Fund (NFZ) confirmed these issues. Local media reports also note a political dimension: the hospital's management and supervisory board include numerous party activists from PSL and KO.
