At least five people suffered gunshot wounds when multiple shooters opened fire near the "Quad Annexes" student residence buildings at Virginia State University (VSU) in the early hours of Saturday, 15 August 2026. Chesterfield County Police responded to the scene at approximately 01:28 local time (05:28 GMT), according to the university's official statement, though one report placed the police arrival at around 01:30. Officers found five people with bullet wounds outside the dormitories. All five victims were transported to hospitals in the surrounding area. One victim was initially in critical condition, while the other four sustained injuries that did not pose a threat to their lives, according to information released by authorities and cited by ABC News.

VSU later confirmed that one of the victims was a VSU student who had already been discharged from hospital. The university said in a statement shared on social media that authorities did not consider there to be an immediate threat to the university community at that time.

Campus lockdown and police response

Following the shooting, VSU Police declared an emergency lockdown of the campus. In a statement published on X, the VSU Police said:

There has been a shooting in the Quad Annexes area in which several victims have been involved, who have been transferred to hospitals in the area. Police are at the scene and ask that the area be avoided. The campus remains on lockdown.

The lockdown was lifted later that morning, though a significant police presence remained on and around the campus as the investigation continued. Chesterfield County Police, which is leading the investigation alongside VSU Police, urged members of the university community to avoid the specific area where investigators were still working.

The university stated that it was cooperating with Chesterfield County Police and other security agencies. In a separate statement shared on social media, VSU said:

Police will maintain an increased presence on the VSU campus while the investigation continues. Students are advised to check their VSU email to stay informed of additional safety measures in effect and information about available support resources.

Authorities also asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward and pledged to release updates as the investigation progresses.

Multiple shooters, no arrests confirmed

The university indicated that multiple shooters were involved in the incident but did not specify whether any suspects had been identified or taken into custody. The shooting occurred near the buildings known as the "Quad Annexes," an area of student residences on the VSU campus. Both campus police and Chesterfield County police are actively investigating the events.
