Investigative units evaluated forensic evidence from the car and identified a 36-year-old German national residing in Valbella, roughly 40 minutes by road from Schmitten. The suspect, Patrick M., worked as the food and beverage manager at a four-star hotel on the Lenzerheide and lived in local staff accommodation. On Tuesday at 17:20, armed cantonal police units carried out a targeted operation at the residential building in Valbella.

The suspect offered no resistance as officers took him into custody. Coworkers residing in the staff accommodation stated that the German national, who has Southeast Asian roots, had recently spent an extended period on medical leave and had previously appeared as a quiet and helpful colleague. Cantonal police confirmed that the suspect and the victim had prior contact, describing the relationship as an informal acquaintance rather than a family tie or close friendship.

Evidence recovery and judicial proceedings

During the subsequent search of the suspect's Valbella apartment, officers discovered multiple personal belongings confirmed to be the property of the deceased woman. Cantonal authorities withheld specifics regarding whether valuable goods or money were among the items to avoid compromising ongoing inquiries into potential robbery motives. Preliminary forensic examinations found no signs that bladed weapons or firearms caused the woman's death. Candinas clarified the preliminary physical examination findings:

The Graubünden Public Prosecutor's Office opened formal criminal proceedings against the 36-year-old suspect on suspicion of intentional homicide.
