Mark Ruffalo rejects antisemitism claim by Paramount over $111B Warner Bros deal
Actor Mark Ruffalo defended his criticism of Paramount's proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery after the studio accused him of antisemitism for citing Oracle's military technology ties in Israel.
Exchange over the Warner Bros acquisition
Actor Mark Ruffalo entered a public dispute with Paramount management regarding the proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. On Friday, the four-time Oscar nominee shared a video on Instagram showing Safra Catz, who serves as Oracle executive vice chair and sits on the Paramount board. In the recording, Catz spoke about providing technology to the Israeli military following the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas and other militant groups, in which 1,195 Israelis and foreign nationals were killed and 251 people were abducted. Ruffalo identified Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison as a classic Oligarch and accused both Larry and his son David Ellison, who leads Paramount, of powering destructive forces through their commercial and technology operations.
Paramount response to the criticism
Paramount responded to Ruffalo's social media post through a corporate statement defending the transaction and leadership. A spokesperson for the enterprise run by David Ellison characterized the remarks as an inappropriate deployment of prejudice in an economic dispute. The company objected to language such as genocide and apartheid when directed at corporate mergers, stating that such characterizations diminish genuine suffering. In addition, the studio asserted that its business strategy focuses on acceptance and broad storytelling.
This brings us to a moment to lower the temperature, not raise it. We'd rather build than further engage in such rhetoric. This simply exposes the true motivation of some who have advocated opposition to this transaction. On the other hand, our commitment to great content is matched by our commitment to acceptance - to every story, every storyteller, and no blacklists, no exceptions, for anyone.
Ruffalo statement on political speech
On Saturday, Ruffalo issued an extended response on X to reject Paramount's accusations of prejudice and defend his right to critique corporate governance. The actor stated that opposition to military technology contracts, corporate executives, or the Israeli prime minister does not equate to hostility toward Jewish people. Ruffalo stated that his perspective and career in acting and activism have been shaped by Jewish friends, colleagues, and family members. He maintained that framing policy criticism as discrimination serves only to stifle necessary dialogue regarding public accountability.
The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel.

Scrutiny of the $111 billion merger
In his Saturday statement, Ruffalo also outlined broad objections to the financial and regulatory structure of the proposed merger. The $111 billion deal would place television networks and film studios, including CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros., under the direct ownership of the Ellison family. Ruffalo pointed to risks regarding the concentration of media control, the livelihood of thousands of industry workers, and the presence of foreign capital backing the purchase whose influence on editorial standards has not been detailed. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have requested formal national security reviews of the transaction, and Ruffalo argued that regulatory agencies should withhold approval until those inquiries provide clear findings to the public.
