Cristiano Ronaldo leaves Portugal camp following dispute with manager Jorge Jesus
The forward exited the national team hotel in Copenhagen before the Nations League match against Denmark, prompting billboard protests in Lisbon and remarks from Portugal's economy minister.
Exit from the national team camp
Cristiano Ronaldo left the Portugal squad camp in Copenhagen on the eve of the Nations League Group A4 fixture against Denmark. The decision followed a discussion with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation and comments made during the pre-match press conference by manager Jorge Jesus, who replaced Roberto Martínez after the 2026 World Cup. The forward departed the team hotel in his training gear and traveled directly to Madrid after learning that Gonçalo Ramos would start the match. Ronaldo holds the record for national team appearances and scoring, with 234 caps and 146 goals since making his debut on 23 August 2003 against Kazakhstan in Chaves under Luiz Felipe Scolari.
After the national team manager's press conference, and following a conversation with the FPF president, I made the decision to leave the national team camp.
Escalation across September fixtures
Tensions developed over ten days following a joint appearance by Ronaldo and Jesus on 23 September at the FPF Football Summit. During that event, the forward stated that he would step aside whenever the manager no longer counted on him. Ronaldo started the opening match against Wales on 24 September, a 1–0 victory in which he had a goal disallowed before being substituted by Ramos in the 67th minute. On 27 September, Jesus benched Ronaldo for the 2–1 win against Norway in Oslo, sending him to warm up for approximately 30 minutes without bringing him onto the pitch. Commentator Edu Aguirre stated that Jesus apologized privately after the Norway match and offered to explain the decision publicly, but Ronaldo felt dissatisfied with how the issue was subsequently addressed.

Lisbon billboards and political reaction
Reactions to the walkout surfaced across the Portuguese capital on 2 October, where three large billboards appeared along key transit routes. Two posters were installed on the Segunda Circular highway near Humberto Delgado Airport and the Estádio da Luz, while a third was placed near the Cidade do Futebol in Caxias. Oeiras municipal authorities removed the Cidade do Futebol structure within hours due to a lack of authorization. The displays showed Ronaldo in color alongside supporters and depicted Jesus in black and white, criticizing the manager for poor management of the player. Minister of Economy Manuel Castro Almeida addressed the situation during an appearance on television channel NOW.
Cristiano Ronaldo has an enormous impact on the projection and valuation of the Portugal brand. He is the best-known person in Portugal, and many people only know Portugal because of Cristiano Ronaldo. This is a value, it is an asset that Portugal has, and it would be good for Portugal to continue to count on this asset.
Reception in Madrid and squad continuation
Following his departure from the squad, Ronaldo returned to his residence in the La Finca district of Madrid. His partner, Georgina Rodríguez, hosted a private dinner on the evening of the Denmark fixture, attending to close friends including journalist Edu Aguirre and his wife Julia MM Salmeán while Portugal played in Copenhagen. Portugal continued its Nations League campaign with Gonçalo Ramos leading the attack, while Ronaldo has not stated whether his departure represents a permanent retirement from international football.
