Romania's interim PM Ilie Bolojan heads to Chișinău as EU opens accession path for Moldova
Romania's interim prime minister Ilie Bolojan will travel to Chișinău on 13–14 June for meetings with Moldovan state institutions and to attend the governing PAS party congress, one day after the EU cleared the first cluster of accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine.
Visit details
Romania's interim prime minister Ilie Bolojan will undertake a working visit to the Republic of Moldova on 13–14 June 2026. According to the Chișinău City Hall, he will meet with representatives of Moldovan state institutions and participate in the congress of the governing Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS). The Romanian government had not issued an official statement about the trip as of late 12 June.
The measure is taken by the police in the context of the arrival in the Republic of Moldova of His Excellency Mr. Ilie Bolojan, Prime Minister of Romania, who will visit state institutions.
The visit comes one day after the European Union's 27 member states agreed to open the first cluster of accession negotiations with both Moldova and Ukraine. Formal talks are expected to open on 15 June at intergovernmental conferences in Luxembourg.
Security restrictions in the capital
To ensure the smooth conduct of the official programme, the Chișinău municipality announced special security measures. From 13 June, 12:00, until 14 June, 21:00, public access will be temporarily limited in central areas of the capital and on roads connecting to the International Airport.
Public gatherings and mass demonstrations will be banned along the routes taken by official motorcades, and all road repairs and utility works will be suspended. The affected perimeter includes the Great National Assembly Square, the "Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt" Public Garden, the squares of the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Parliament, the Presidency, and several central arteries such as Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard, București Street, and Alexandru Pușkin Street.
Pre-declared socio-cultural events coordinated with the City Hall and other authorities are exempt. The General Police Inspectorate and the Chișinău Police Directorate will enforce public order and inform citizens about the restrictions.
EU accession context
- EU member states agree to open the first accession cluster with Moldova and Ukraine.
- Security restrictions take effect in central Chișinău ahead of Bolojan's arrival.
- Bolojan visits state institutions and attends the PAS party congress in Chișinău.
- Security restrictions are lifted.
- EU holds intergovernmental accession conferences with Moldova and Ukraine in Luxembourg.
The decision to launch the first negotiating cluster was taken by the EU on 12 June, and the intergovernmental conferences are scheduled for Monday, 15 June. The timing underscores the rapidly advancing institutional relationship between Chișinău and Brussels. Bolojan's visit, framed around bilateral ties and party politics, falls squarely in this momentum.
Recent bilateral engagement
Ilie Bolojan was last in Chișinău on 28–29 May, when he attended the "Strong Mayoralties, Developed Localities" event focused on local administration reform. During that earlier visit he held talks with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu on European integration, energy security, common infrastructure, connectivity, and regional resilience.
That trip was cut short after a Russian-origin Geran 2 drone crashed into an apartment block in Galați, Romania, causing an explosion and a fire on the 10th floor. Two people, a mother and son, were injured and hospitalised. Bolojan returned urgently to Romania following the incident.
