Romanian F-16 fighter destroys explosive naval drone near Neptun Deep gas platform
A Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed an explosive-laden naval drone drifting near the Neptun Deep gas field in the Black Sea, hundreds of meters from workers on an offshore platform.
Black Sea interception
A Romanian F-16 fighter jet destroyed an explosive-laden naval drone in the Black Sea on Thursday morning, acting Defence Minister Radu Miruță announced. A commercial vessel first alerted the Romanian Coast Guard after spotting the unmanned surface craft drifting roughly 80 nautical miles east of the port city of Constanță within Romania's exclusive economic zone. Romanian authorities scrambled two F-16 fighter jets with orders to fire, and one aircraft destroyed the drone using its onboard cannon. The engagement was authorised in coordination with Romanian President Nicușor Dan to safeguard offshore energy infrastructure. Following the strike, a coast guard vessel carrying an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Romanian Navy deployed to the site to inspect the remaining debris and assess potential hazards.
Threat to Neptun Deep infrastructure
The naval drone was intercepted several hundred meters from active offshore drilling and construction operations at the Neptun Deep natural gas field. Hundreds of personnel are stationed on the platform, with full commercial gas extraction scheduled to begin in 2027. Acting Defence Minister Miruță confirmed that Bucharest utilized a direct communication channel established with Kyiv to verify that the vessel did not originate from Ukrainian armed forces. President Dan placed responsibility for the incident on Moscow, stating that the Romanian Air Force operated in a race against time to protect civilian workers on the facility. Dan condemned the escalation of irresponsible incidents by the Russian Federation and commended the response of national armed forces and coast guard personnel.
European reactions and hybrid security
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed the Black Sea operation on Thursday, describing the event as part of an escalating campaign of pressure directed at member states.
The hybrid warfare unnerves the citizens of the EU and aims to divide our union.
Von der Leyen did not explicitly assign blame for the naval drone encounter, but noted that hybrid threats pose ongoing challenges to European cohesion. The incident occurs as European Union and NATO members seek to upgrade air and drone defence networks across Eastern Europe. Larger NATO allies routinely deploy fighter aircraft to assist Romania with airspace surveillance along its eastern borders, while allied air policing rotations also cover Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which do not operate their own combat jets.

Regional border and airspace incursions
The maritime interception follows a series of drone incidents affecting Romania and neighbouring countries. Overnight into 20 August, an unmanned aerial vehicle crashed in Tulcea county near the 600-kilometre border with Ukraine, igniting a ground fire that burned out quickly without causing injuries. On 16 August, a Spanish F-18 fighter jet conducting NATO air policing intercepted a drone over Galați county after the craft crossed into Romanian airspace from Moldova. Earlier in the year, a Russian drone struck a residential building in Galați, injuring two people. In late July, Bucharest expelled a Russian diplomat following three consecutive days of airspace incursions. Across the region, Poland and the Baltic states have reported repeated drone incursions, while an explosive-laden drone was discovered in early August within the cargo security area of Leipzig/Halle airport in Germany near Ukrainian transport aircraft.
