Romania retrieves drone fragments along Black Sea coast as 100 incursions recorded
Military divers and emergency teams recovered drone fragments near Port Midia and Black Sea resorts following a wave of over 100 regional incursions.
Black Sea coastal debris discoveries
Romanian authorities deployed military personnel and emergency response teams after multiple drone fragments appeared along the Black Sea coast and near maritime infrastructure. On Friday, August 21, an emergency call to 112 alerted the Ministry of National Defence to a floating object roughly 25 metres from the southern breakwater of Port Midia in Constanta county. Explosive Ordnance Disposal combat divers from the Romanian Naval Forces evaluated and recovered the object, confirming it carried no explosive charge before transferring it to the Coast Guard. Additional fragments were located across several coastal resort communities, including Navodari, Tuzla, and Mangalia. Firefighters and gendarmes established security perimeters around the discovery sites to permit specialized teams to retrieve the debris. In Navodari, where debris washed into coastal concrete breakwaters, authorities warned civilians against handling unidentified objects after two tourists were recorded dragging a fragment from the sea.
Airspace violations and naval responses
The maritime discoveries follow a series of airspace violations and naval threats across southeastern Romania. In the early hours of Thursday, an aerial drone crossed into Romanian airspace and came down in an uninhabited sector of Tulcea county during Russian military strikes on Ukrainian territory. The Ministry of National Defence launched two Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 fighter jets to monitor the area alongside a Romanian Air Force IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter. On the same day, Romanian forces detected a surface maritime drone carrying an explosive payload several hundred metres from ongoing offshore work at the Neptun Deep platform in the Black Sea. A Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jet intercepted and destroyed the unmanned maritime vessel using its onboard cannon.

- Specialists secure additional drone fragments found in Navodari, Tuzla, and Mangalia
Diplomatic coordination and eastern flank security
Addressing the security situation on CNN, Romania's interim Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu, stated that the country has recorded more than 100 incursions across its air, land, and maritime spaces involving drones, debris, and unmanned naval craft. Toiu noted that Romanian forces have brought down four drones during airspace incidents. She explained that Bucharest is coordinating with NATO allies and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe to reinforce regional defensive capabilities. The bilateral discussions with Washington aim to ensure that Black Sea security remains a strategic priority during alliance reviews.
We are collaborating closely with the other allies and, together with SACEUR, we have a clear plan for consolidating capabilities on the eastern flank. We are also currently working within the bilateral relationship with the United States, our strategic partner, to ensure that, in the process of reassessing the posture of the American presence in Europe, the Black Sea region and the eastern flank are treated with priority.
Allied surveillance and public safety protocols
The strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure also prompted the Polish military to initiate preventive aviation operations to secure Poland's airspace during the Russian assault. Romanian emergency services reiterated public guidance instructing coastal residents and tourists to avoid touching suspicious floating or stranded objects and to report all sightings to 112 immediately. Military specialists continue technical assessments on the recovered fragments in coordination with maritime border units. Romanian armed forces maintain aerial and naval patrols along the Black Sea perimeter to monitor further maritime traffic and offshore energy installations.
