Romanian F-16 disables unmanned naval drone drifting near Neptun Deep gas platform
A Romanian F-16 fighter jet fired cannon rounds on 20 August 2026 to neutralize an unmanned surface vessel drifting near the Neptun Deep offshore gas platform in the Black Sea.
Interception near Neptun Deep
On 20 August 2026, the Romanian military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to intercept an unmanned surface vessel drifting a few hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas drilling platform in the Black Sea. Platform installation work was underway at the time with several hundred personnel on site. The fighter jets disabled the floating vessel with cannon fire, enabling military explosive ordnance disposal personnel to execute a controlled detonation. Romanian President Nicușor Dan attributed the craft to Russia and condemned the incident on social media.
I strongly condemn the intensification of these types of irresponsible incidents on the part of the Russian Federation. We remain vigilant alongside NATO allies to defend ourselves and repel such challenges.
Technical examination and capabilities
Independent naval analyst H.I. Sutton examined imagery of the black-hulled surface craft, which was seen floating inertly with seabirds perched on its hull before the strike. The vessel represents a previously unidentified model differing from the surface drones Russia has used in strikes against Odesa. Although the bow lacked impact fuses that would indicate a direct contact warhead, the hull contained a large forward hangar with a hinged hatch capable of housing missiles or aerial drones. Sutton identified multiple sensors, including commercial navigation radar, forward-facing search antennas, MESH radio equipment, electro-optical sensors, and flat satellite antennas.
Regional drone activity in the Black Sea
The interception occurred alongside several other drone sightings across the western Black Sea and Danube border area. Romanian authorities confirmed through direct military channels with Kyiv that the vessel did not belong to Ukraine. Interim Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu stated on CNN that Romania has recorded over 100 incursions involving aerial, land, or maritime drones and debris, resulting in four aerial drones shot down.
Russia is responsible for the risks it generates in the Black Sea, risks that, this time, target the energy infrastructure of the Neptun Deep gas project in the Black Sea.
On the same day as the offshore interception, another drone was located at Grindu, while a separate drone exploded near the Giurgiulești port in Moldova, leaving two craters up to half a meter deep.

Strategic energy stakes and domestic debate
The Neptun Deep perimeter, split equally between Romgaz and OMV Petrom, represents a 4 billion dollar development holding 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves. Scheduled to start full production in 2027, the site will make Romania the largest gas producer in the European Union. Former President Traian Băsescu criticized interim Defense Minister Radu Miruță over the official response, contending that the drone had drifted uncontrollably after being spotted by a passing commercial vessel. Băsescu stated that NATO Article 5 does not extend to exclusive economic zones, urging Bucharest to deploy dedicated military assets to defend offshore platforms outside sovereign territorial waters.
