
Range Rover confirms electric GT for 2027, stepping beyond SUVs with sleek grand tourer
The all-electric grand tourer, built on a new EMA platform, will be produced in Halewood and launch in 2027, marking the brand's biggest departure from its SUV heritage and taking on the Porsche Taycan.
A radical departure
Range Rover has confirmed an all-electric grand tourer, the Range Rover GT, a fifth model line that breaks decisively from the brand's SUV-only history. The low-slung, coupé-like car will be the first vehicle built on JLR's new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) and is scheduled to reach customers in 2027. Martin Limpert, managing director of Range Rover, described the GT as intended to "redefine the grand-touring segment" with "capabilities no conventional GT can match."

Design and platform
Prototype images show a sleek silhouette with a strong shoulder line, a raked windscreen, and a rear that is less distinctively Range Rover. The car sits lower and wider than any previous model from the marque. Camouflaged test vehicles have been spotted at the Nürburgring and in the Arctic Circle, wearing a gold-and-black wrap inspired by topographic contours around Gaydon, Warwickshire, where the design team is based.
The EMA platform is powertrain-agnostic. At launch the GT will be a full battery electric vehicle, but Range Rover has confirmed that a plug-in hybrid version will follow. The architecture is central to JLR's shift towards software-defined vehicles, moving beyond simply swapping an engine for a battery pack.
Interior and technology
The cabin adopts what Range Rover calls "reductive modernism": a horizontal, minimalist layout with a wide, slender driver display and a larger central screen. A panoramic glass roof stretches over both rows, and the rear offers more legroom than the exterior profile suggests. Buyers will be able to choose between a two-seat rear bench or a conventional three-seat arrangement. Materials include a mix of textiles and other finishes, with technology largely hidden from view.
Market positioning and competition
The GT places Range Rover directly against premium electric tourers such as the Porsche Taycan and upcoming rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The Irish Times reports an expected range of around 600km on a single charge, though no official figure has been released. Limpert stressed that the car will retain all-terrain capability, a claim that, if realised, would revive a niche once occupied by lifted estates like the Subaru Outback and Volvo XC70 before SUVs absorbed it.
The launch also raises questions about internal competition with sister brand Jaguar, whose own all-electric grand tourer, the Type 01, is due in the same year. Both marques sit under JLR, and Range Rover will need to differentiate the GT from Jaguar's similarly timed reset.
Production and timeline
The GT will be built at JLR's Halewood plant on Merseyside, alongside the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport. A full exterior reveal and technical specifications are expected later in 2026, with the first customer deliveries following in 2027. The hybrid variant will arrive after the initial electric launch.
