Wildfire in Santa Marta de Penaguião enters mopping-up stage with 211 personnel on site
Emergency services in northern Portugal moved a scrubland fire in Santa Marta de Penaguião into the mopping-up phase early Sunday, leaving over 200 personnel to secure the area.
Ignition in Vila Real scrubland
A vegetation fire broke out in the municipality of Santa Marta de Penaguião, located in the northern Portuguese district of Vila Real, on the afternoon of Saturday, August 22, 2026. The fire started at approximately 13:54 in an area of rural scrubland. Upon ignition, the fire developed two active fronts that consumed dry brush and wild vegetation across the terrain. Regional emergency teams dispatched ground units to assess the perimeter and establish containment lines. Civil Protection authorities informed the Lusa news agency during the early hours of the response that the fire did not threaten any residential structures or inhabited buildings in the vicinity, allowing crews to focus directly on suppression along the active fire lines.
Mobilization of emergency resources
The operational scale of the response increased steadily throughout Saturday afternoon as regional emergency structures mobilized additional crews, equipment, and aerial resources. According to official data published on the portal of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), 133 operational personnel were actively fighting the fire by 16:25 on Saturday. These ground firefighters were supported by 33 emergency vehicles and three firefighting aircraft. As operations progressed further into Saturday evening, ANEPC reported that the deployment expanded to more than 150 personnel. These operatives were supported by more than 40 ground vehicles and five aerial units assigned to tackle the two active advancing fronts.
