Portugal likely to extend state of alert as extreme heat and wildfires persist, minister says
Interior Minister Luís Neves warned that the coming week will be "very grave" and confirmed the activation of the EU civil protection mechanism and emergency contacts with Morocco.
Extreme weather and fire risk
Portugal is facing a prolonged period of extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 47 °C in some interior regions and wind gusts of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour. The combination of high temperatures, very low humidity and strong winds has turned the country into what authorities describe as a powder keg. The current state of alert, which began at midnight on Friday 3 July, was initially set to expire at 23:59 on Monday 6 July, but the government now admits it will almost certainly be extended.
The next week will again be a very serious period. The maintenance of the state of alert is on the table if the conditions persist.
Government response and alert status
Speaking at a press conference at the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) on Saturday afternoon, Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves said the executive is already evaluating an extension of the exceptional measures. He stressed that meteorological projections leave no room for complacency and that the country remains in a highly dangerous situation. The alert imposes restrictions and allows the repositioning of firefighting resources across the entire national territory.

International assistance
Faced with the violence of the flames and the simultaneous outbreak of multiple fires, Portugal has activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism. Neves also revealed that he had spoken directly with his Moroccan counterpart to arrange the dispatch of additional aerial firefighting assets.
I spoke an hour ago with my Moroccan counterpart and I am awaiting a response shortly.
Firefighting efforts
The strategy of the emergency services is focused on overwhelming initial attack. Neves said that around 94 to 95% of fires have been extinguished in the first moments, and that resources are being distributed nationwide to ensure the fastest possible response. He praised the coordination among firefighters, civil protection agents, regional commands and mayors, noting the strong camaraderie he witnessed during a nighttime visit to the command posts in Águeda, Vouzela and Sever do Vouga.
One of the most serious incidents is a large fire in Vouzela, where authorities suspect arson because it broke out in the early hours of the morning. The minister acknowledged that the country is only at the start of a tough battle.
We are at the beginning of a firm fight that will last months.
Outlook
With the heatwave expected to shift towards the Alentejo and the south of the country, the coming days will bring continued high pressure on firefighting services. Neves defended the need to reinforce investment in aerial means, describing it as an evolving effort that must be constantly rethought. The government will decide on the formal extension of the state of alert in the next few days, depending on the evolution of weather conditions.
