Greek police reject inaction claims after metro station manager assault in Korydallos

Physical confrontation at Korydallos station

A violent incident occurred on the evening of Friday, 21 August 2026, at the Korydallos metro station in the Attica region. A male individual launched a physical attack against the on-duty station manager inside the station facilities. Police personnel deployed nearby under a specialized transit policing initiative responded to the location to manage the situation. During the intervention and subsequent pursuit, the assailant turned on the responding police officers and attacked them directly. Despite the violent behaviour of the suspect, the officers managed to immobilize him and carry out an arrest at the scene. The Korydallos Police Department took custody of the suspect and drafted a formal criminal case file charging him with disobedience alongside violence against employees and judicial persons.

Hellenic Police dispute media claims

The Hellenic Police Headquarters released an official statement on 24 August 2026 to clarify the events surrounding the Korydallos station assault. The intervention followed several media publications that claimed police officers failed to respond or that the perpetrator was left uncontrolled following the altercation. Law enforcement authorities firmly rejected these descriptions, stating that the reports did not reflect the reality of the operational response.

The police headquarters explained that officers intervened without hesitation to protect transit staff and commuters, leading to the immobilization and detention of the suspect despite the physical attacks directed against the officers themselves.

Operational design of Plan Ariadne

The responding officers were deployed as part of Plan Ariadne, an operational security initiative structured for public transit networks throughout Attica. The plan utilizes both visible uniformed patrols and covert policing methods across train carriages, metro platforms, bus stops, and central transfer hubs. Police commanders perform daily assessments of security data to allocate manpower according to operational needs across the transportation network. A force of 410 police officers is currently assigned to Plan Ariadne duties. These officers are distributed across multiple public transport operators, including STASY urban rail and tram services, the Proastiakos suburban railway, OSY bus routes, and KTEL regional bus services.

Transit enforcement metrics across Attica

Alongside its statement regarding the station manager assault, the Hellenic Police reviewed the operational performance of Plan Ariadne between 19 February 2025 and 30 June 2026. The reported figures relate to an evaluation first outlined in a 14 July 2026 release titled "Security in Public Transport - The 'Ariadne' program in the service of citizens". Over the 16-month monitoring window, transit officers performed 283,988 security checks across Attica transit lines, resulting in 4,432 arrests. The police forces also provided assistance to transit fare inspectors during more than 11,500 inspections. Additional recorded activities included 938 interventions regarding begging incidents, 876 interventions involving drug-dependent individuals, 211 cases supporting vulnerable individuals, and 42 provisions of first aid.
