Poland defeats Romania 6-0 in Warsaw as Gheorghe Hagi assumes blame for 59-year record loss
Romania suffered a 6-0 defeat against Poland at PGE Narodowy on Friday after defender Radu Drăgușin received a red card, leaving the squad bottom of Nations League Group B4 with 12 goals conceded in three matches.
Six-goal collapse at PGE Narodowy
Poland defeated Romania 6-0 on Friday evening at PGE Narodowy in Warsaw during the third round of UEFA Nations League Group B4 fixtures. The Romanian side played with ten men for a large part of the match after defender Radu Drăgușin was sent off with a red card. The Polish squad, captained by Robert Lewandowski, broke through Romania's defense repeatedly in the second half, scoring multiple goals within a ten-minute span. The defeat leaves Romania in fourth place in the group with zero points and a total of 12 goals conceded across three consecutive matches.
Heaviest margin in 59 years
The six-goal deficit marks Romania's widest margin of defeat in 59 years. The national team last lost by six goals on 24 May 1967, when Switzerland secured a 7-1 victory in European Championship qualifying. An earlier six-goal defeat occurred on 1 November 1962, when Spain defeated Romania 6-0 in the same competition qualifiers.

Gheorghe Hagi accepts full blame
Head coach Gheorghe Hagi addressed the defeat in post-match comments, stating that his tactical plan unravelled when the team entered the second half without adequate energy. Hagi acknowledged that conceding four goals at home against Bosnia and six away in Warsaw placed the primary fault on his management.
I am the head coach, I am to blame, first of all. Tactically, I did things. As a team we did not react well. We needed a lot of energy, we could not do it. We came out soft from the locker room. The team is not reacting, when you take four goals at home and six away, it is clear that the main culprit is me.
When questioned directly about a potential resignation, Hagi stated that discussing his future made little sense prior to Romania hosting Sweden on Monday at Arena Națională in Bucharest. He noted that evaluations would follow that upcoming match.
Pundits and players react to defeat
Romania international Ianis Hagi spoke through tears following the match. The midfielder expressed deep disappointment with the performance while taking personal responsibility as one of the squad's leaders.
It is a very sad moment, where we must reflect, look in the mirror starting with me, down to the last person in the national team, and think seriously about where we want to go.
Romanian sports portal GSP.ro described the team as helpless following Drăgușin's red card. On Digi Sport, television presenter Radu Naum questioned former internationals Florin Prunea and Gabi Balint about the technical staff. Balint argued that Romania belongs in League C based on player quality, while Prunea called for a broader review of Romanian football, including the circumstances surrounding the earlier departure of previous manager Edi Iordănescu. Romania will play Sweden next on Monday in Bucharest.
