Poland beat Romania 6-0 as Dragusin red card against Lewandowski divides experts
Poland defeated Romania 6-0 at PGE Narodowy in the Nations League after referee Urs Schnyder dismissed Radu Dragusin in the 23rd minute, prompting disagreement among refereeing experts over the penalty decision.
The dismissal at PGE Narodowy
During a UEFA Nations League group match at PGE Narodowy on Friday, 2 October, Poland earned a 6-0 victory over Romania. The match turned in the 22nd to 23rd minute when match referee Urs Schnyder awarded Poland a penalty kick and showed a straight red card to Romanian defender Radu Dragusin. The play originated from a pass by Sebastian Szymanski to Robert Lewandowski, who headed the ball forward inside the penalty area to set up a shooting chance. Dragusin placed his arm against the shoulder and back of the Chicago Fire striker, who then fell to the ground. The decision left Romania with ten players for more than an hour and allowed Jan Urban's team to construct a six-goal victory.
Conflicting expert assessments
The decision produced sharply contrasting evaluations from football analysts regarding whether the contact warranted both a penalty and an ejection. Former FIFA referee and TVP Sport expert Rafal Rostkowski supported Schnyder's ruling directly after the game.
Great decision by the referee! An evident hand foul and an evident red card, because this foul deprived Robert Lewandowski of the opportunity to take a shot from open play.
Rostkowski stated that Dragusin reached out his arm to form a barrier preventing Lewandowski from running onto the ball before pushing him. In contrast, 49-year-old pundit Maciej Terlecki criticized the officiating on the Polsat Cast program, arguing that the contact was too minimal to justify the outcome.
We can congratulate and thank the referee who ruined the spectacle. Even if a penalty was awarded... Is putting a hand on the back enough to fall in the penalty area and also give a red card?
Video analysis and refereeing debate
Terlecki stated that Dragusin's hand on Lewandowski's back did not cause the fall, arguing that an experienced referee should not have attributed the striker's tumble to the defender's touch. Polish referee Marcin Borski gave a separate assessment after watching video replays on Saturday morning, suggesting an intermediate interpretation between the opposing viewpoints.
According to me the truth lies in the middle, yesterday I was at the stadium and watching it, I concluded it was a penalty without a card, whereas when I watched it calmly this morning, it should have been a penalty with a yellow card.
Borski acknowledged that Dragusin understood his actions when making contact, but observed that Lewandowski used his veteran experience to go down smoothly on timing. He added a critical comparison to coach Adrian Siemieniec, asserting that the forward acted with premeditation to secure an unsporting advantage.
Group standings and the next fixture
The 6-0 result keeps Poland in third place in their UEFA Nations League group. Head coach Jan Urban's squad must achieve a positive result in their next match to climb higher in the table, as they trail second-placed Bosnia and Herzegovina by one point. Poland will face Bosnia and Herzegovina on 5 October at 20:45. Commentators noted that evaluating Poland's overall form under Urban remains difficult because Romania played shorthanded for the vast majority of Friday's contest.
