Police shoot dead knife-wielding woman described as 'in a state of dementia' in Paris restaurant
A woman described as 'in a state of dementia' was fatally shot by police in a Paris restaurant on Wednesday after she stabbed a female officer, authorities said.
Incident at a Paris restaurant
A woman was shot dead by police inside a restaurant in the 12th arrondissement of Paris on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 July 2026. Officers had been called to the Rue de Wattignies address shortly after 5 p.m., with initial reports citing a dispute or a woman barricaded in a cellar. The Paris prosecutor's office later described the individual as “a woman described as being in a state of dementia”.
According to the very first elements brought to the knowledge of the prosecutor’s office — and which must be verified — the police were requested on site because of a woman described as being in a state of dementia in a restaurant. The intervening officers explained that she had emerged with a knife and attacked a policewoman. Several shots were fired and the death of the woman was recorded on site.
When officers arrived, the woman reportedly grabbed a knife and lunged at one of the female officers. The officer sustained a knife wound; the prefecture de police said she was “lightly injured”. A second officer then opened fire with his service weapon, discharging several rounds. The woman was declared dead at the scene despite the intervention of emergency services.
Sequence of events
According to police accounts, the woman had barricaded herself in the restaurant’s cellar before officers entered. The prefecture de police stated that “upon their arrival, the threatening woman stabbed a police officer,” leading the other officer to use his weapon. Le Parisien cited a police source as saying the woman took the knife and headed toward the officers before the shooting. The restaurant, situated on Rue de Wattignies in eastern Paris, has not been named. Authorities have also not released the name or age of the deceased woman.
The police officer who was hit is lightly injured.
Immediate aftermath
A prosecutor from the Paris prosecutor’s office rushed to the scene, standard procedure in police shootings. The office stressed that the facts reported are preliminary and subject to verification. By early evening, no details about the woman’s background or possible motive were available. The IGPN, the French police watchdog, is likely to open a formal investigation into the use of force, though no announcement was made in the immediate aftermath. The rapid deployment of a magistrate to the scene underscores the seriousness with which French authorities treat firearms discharges by officers.
