Wildfire near Oinoi contained after preventive evacuations, mayor reports no homes burned
A wildfire that broke out near the village of Oinoi in western Attica on July 5 was brought under control after a large aerial and ground response, with seven homes evacuated as a precaution and no property damage reported.
Fire breaks out near Oinoi
A wildfire ignited on July 5, 2026, close to the village of Oinoi in the municipality of Mandra-Eidyllia, west of Athens. The fire started approximately 20 metres from the first houses, along the old Athens-Thebes national road. Strong winds pushed the flames away from the settlement and toward a mountainous, forested area, sparing residential structures.
Response and containment
Firefighting forces deployed a large number of aerial and ground units. The mayor of Mandra-Eidyllia, Armodios Drikos, described the operation as effective.
The situation is improved, a large number of aerial and ground forces are operating. We have encircled it, created zones and I believe it will be brought under full control.
Municipal civil protection mechanisms were also fully activated, and volunteers assisted in the effort.
Preventive evacuations
Seven homes in the Kassandra area were evacuated as a precaution, primarily because of dense smoke and to protect public health. No houses were damaged, and the village of Oinoi itself was not threatened after the fire was contained.
There were some houses that were at risk, which is why we preventively evacuated seven homes in a settlement. Oinoi was not endangered, because we ultimately encircled the fire and no house has burned.
Investigation into cause
Authorities are examining witness accounts that an object, possibly a cigarette, was thrown from a passing vehicle shortly before the fire started. The timing and location coincide with the outbreak. The fire service's investigative unit and the Hellenic Police are collecting statements and reviewing security camera footage to verify the reports.
I want to believe that there is no person in 2026 who throws cigarettes or anything else from a car.
The mayor noted that the combination of high temperatures and strong winds caused the fire to spread rapidly, but the exact cause remains under investigation.
